While getting ready for the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds in late September, VEF Riga added depth to its backcourt by signing young point guard Aigars Skele to a one year contract on Monday. Skele (1.92 meters, 21 years old) arrives from Latvian side Jurmala, where he played 46 games last season, averaging 12.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game, and helping his club to a Latvian League semifinals. Skele spent three seasons with Funlabrada of Spain, playing for its vinculated teams, before returning to his home country in 2012. He spent a season with Barons kvartals, then joined Jurmala last summer."Last season was Aigars’ first full season of professional career, in which he showed a remarkable performance”, said Riga head coach Nikolajs Mazurs, and added: “He has shown a willingness to take the next step in his career, as evidenced in entering the Latvian National Team. Aigars has extraordinary style, and he is able to change the flow of the game."
