Nizhny Novgorod adds guard Mekel

Nizhny Novgorod reached an agreement with guard Gal Mekel to work together until the end of the 2015-16 season, the club announced Tuesday. His contract will only be valid if the player is inscribed in time to play the second half of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16. Mekel (1.90 meters, 26 years old) arrives from New Orleans of the NBA, where he averaged 1.5 points and 3.3 assists in four games this season. Mekel has also played for Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, Altshuler Saham Galil Gilboa and Maccabi Bazan Haifa of Israel, Benetton Treviso of Italy, Dallas of the NBA and Frisco of the D-League. Mekel is also a regular member of the Israeli national team. He won two Israeli League titles - with Galil in 2010 and Maccabi Haifa in 2013 - and was the Israeli League MVP after both the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons. Mekel played the Kamkabel International Junior Tournament at the 2005 Final Four, where he averaged 21.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists in three games. He has only played one Euroleague game until now - 59 seconds against CSKA Moscow on November 5, 2009.
