Real Madrid lands big man Thompkins
Turkish Airlines Euroleague champion Real Madrid has added a strong source of rebounding to its frontcourt by signing power forward Trey Thompkins to a one-year contract. Thompkins (2.08 meters, 25 years old) debuted in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague last season with Nizhny Novgorod, for whom he averaged 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds in 23 games. He ranked third in rebounds and 12th in performance index ranking (15.7 per game) among all Euroleague players, marking a sensational comeback season after having spent most of the previous two years sidelined due to a severe knee injury. Thompkins had started his pro career with Los Angeles Clippers of the NBA, got injured in spring of 2013 and returned to action by joining Nizhny last season. He improved his numbers as the season went on, ranking sixth in scoring (15.7 ppg.) and third in rebounding (8.9 rpg.) in the Top 16. Previously, he had spent four seasons at the University of Georgia, where he averaged 16.4 points and 7.6 rebounds in 30 NCAA games in the 2010-11 season. Now, Thompkins will try to help Madrid defend the Euroleague title for the first time since 1968.
