Real Madrid re-signs All-Euroleague center Ayon
Real Madrid reached a new agreement with center Gustavo Ayon to keep working together for three more years, until the end of the 2018-19 season, the club announced on Thursday. Ayon (2.08 meters, 31 years old) was chosen to the All-EuroLeague second team last season, averaging 11.6 points on 62.2% two-point shooting, 7.9 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.3 blocks in 27 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games. Ayon led the competition in offensive rebounds (3 orpg.), was second in steals and third in blocks. In his two seasons with Real Madrid, Ayon led Madrid to back-to-back Spanish doubles - league and cup titles -, an Intercontinental Cup crown and above all, the 2014-15 EuroLeague title - the club's first since 1995. Ayon began his career in his native Mexico with Halcones de Xalapa and later played for Vaqueros de Agua Prieta and Dorados de Playa del Carmen also of Mexico, Illescas, Fuenlabrada and Tenerife in Spain, Marinos de Anzoategui of Venezuela, as well as for New Orleans, Orlando and Milwaukee of the NBA. Ayon is also a member of the Mexican national team. He led Mexico to respective gold medals at the 2013 FIBA Americas championship and the 2014 CentroBasket, and lifted the Venezuelan League trophy with Anzoategui in 2009. In the last two seasons, Ayon ranks leads the EuroLeague in total steals (80), ranking 4th in performance index ranking (837), 2nd in rebounds (344) and 4th in blocks (51).
