Belgian champions Spirou Basket continued loading up for the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds by adding promising forward Tornike Shengalia with a two-year contract announced Saturday. Shengalia (2.05 meters, 19 years old), a former Eurocup champion, arrives from another Belgian club, Verviers-Pepinster, for whom he put up 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 18.7 minutes on average last season. Shengalia previously played two seasons at Valencia Basket in Spain. In 2008-09, he appeared in six Spanish League games and making his Eurocup debut at age 18. The next season, he appeared in three games and was the youngest player in uniform as Valencia hoisted the Eurocup trophy. Already this summer, Shengelia was among the stars Division B tournament of Eurobasket Under 20, averaging averaging 29.9 points, 12 rebounds and 2.3 blocks over 9 games while leading the national team of Georgia to the title and promotion to Division A. Shengalia is currently on the 14-man roster of the Georgian men's national team, which must cut down to 12 before starting Eurobasket 2011 in Lithuania later this month.
