Maccabi wins its 52nd Israeli championship

Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv trounced UNET Holon 95-75 in the Israeli League championship game on Thursday in Tel Aviv to capture its 52nd league title. Alex Tyus was named final four MVP after posting 10 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks in the final to help Maccabi snap a three-year championship drought and avenge its loss to Holon in the Israeli Cup final. Jake Cohen led six Maccabi scorers in double figures with 18 points and 4 steals, Michael Roll scored 15 points, John Dibartolomeo and Norris Cole had 13 each and DeAndre Kane recorded 10 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Maccabi outrebounded Holon 48-35. Maccabi took charge from the start with a 13-0 opening run that reached 24-5 before Holon caught its breath. From that point Maccabi protected its lead and even when Glen Rice Jr. and Tu Holloway heated up for Holon, Maccabi had all the answers. Holloway finished with 20 points, Rice scored 14, Joe Alexander 13 and Tamir Blatt 12 in defeat.

Reds beat Greens to force winner-takes-all Game 5 in Greek finals

Olympiacos Piraeus defeated Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens 92-76 on Thursday night to tie their best-of-five Greek League finals series at 2-2 and force a winner-takes-all Game 5. Jamel McLean led the Reds with 20 points, Brian Roberts scored 16, Vassilis Spanoulis 13, Georgios Printezis posted 12 points and 11 rebounds and Janis Strelnieks added 11 points. Mike James paced Panathinaikos with 20 points, Matt Lojeski made 4 of 6 three-pointers for 16 points and Nick Calathes and James Gist each scored 12. Printezis netted the game's first 4 points as the Reds took charge early. A Roberts triple gave Olympiacos a double-digit lead late in the first quarter, which ended at 28-19. Ian Vougioukas drew the visitors within 4 early in the second quarter, but Olympiacos bounced back and rolled into halftime ahead 48-36. Lojeski and James hit back-to-back threes in a 0-8 charge by the Greens to get within 53-50 and James added another triple to make it 57-55. Roberts scored the last 4 points of the third quarter to keep the Reds in control at 71-64. The teams traded shots throughout the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, however Roberts and McLean scored all the points in a 9-0 run that made it 86-71 and Panathinaikos never recovered.

Lithuania: Davies leads Zalgiris to Game 3 victory

Brandon Davies dominated with 27 points and 7 rebounds to lead Zalgiris Kaunas to a 90-80 victory over Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius and a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Lithuanian League finals. Davies drew 11 fouls and made 11 of 12 free throws in posting a performance index rating of 38. Edgaras Ulanovas added 15 points, Aaron White posted 12 points and 7 boards and Paulius Jankunas chipped in with 10 points. The hosts outrebounded Rytas 42-20 and scored 17 second-chance points, compared to just 5 for Rytas. Loukas Mavrokefalidis paced Rytas with 19 points, Chris Kramer recorded 16 points and 6 assists and Rokas Giedraitis and Martynas Echodas had 12 points apiece. Axel Toupane and Davies dominated early as Zalgiris stormed out to a 12-1 start, but Mavrokefalidis led Rytas back and the first quarter closed at 24-19. Rytas kept the momentum in the second quarter and after tying the score several times, took its first lead at 29-30 on an Echodas jumper midway through the quarter. Zalgiris scored the next 6 points, but Rytas finished the half strong and a three by Mavrokefalidis tied it at 40-40 at the break. Zalgiris went ahead early in the third and Davies and Ulanovas pushed the hosts to a 67-59 advantage after three quarters. Davies continued his dominant form late to keep Rytas at bay and ensure a victory for the home team.
