Champs, Fernandez pen new deal through 2020

After a magical season in which he helped Real Madrid win the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and Spanish League crowns, Rudy Fernandez signed a deal to remain with Los Blancos for the next two seasons. Fernandez (1.97 meters, 33 years old) averaged 7.4 points and 2.6 assists in 31 EuroLeague games last season, which was his seventh with the Spanish powerhouse. He helped Madrid win EuroLeague titles in 2015 and 2018 and reach the championship game in both 2013 and 2014. Fernandez has also won four Spanish League titles and was the finals MVP this season after scoring 27 points in the clincher. He has lifted the Spanish Copa del Rey four times since he arrived in Madrid, too.

Fernandez started his career with Joventut Badalona, which he helped win the FIBA EuroCup title in 2006 and both the ULEB Cup and the Copa del Rey in 2008. In between, Fernandez made his EuroLeague debut and was chosen as the 2007 EuroLeague Rising. He then played for Portland and Denver of the NBA before returning to Madrid in the summer of 2011. He was chosen to the All-EuroLeague First Team in 2013 and 2014 and collected second team honors in 2015. Fernandez has enjoyed tremendous success with the Spanish national team throughout its golden age. He helped Spain win the 2006 FIBA World Cup, EuroBasket gold medals in 2009, 2011 and 2015 and three Olympic medals - silver in Beijing 2008 and London 2012, bronze in Rio 2016. Fernandez also helped Spain to a EuroBasket silver in 2007 and bronze in 2013. He is one of just three players to have won the EuroBasket, World Cup, EuroLeague and EuroCup titles, joining his teammate Felipe Reyes and Dejan Tomasevic. Fernandez has amassed 2,031 points, 622 rebounds and 531 assists in 187 EuroLeague career games. He ranks ninth on the competition's all-time charts with 238 career steals and 10th with 333 three-pointers made.
