Doron Perkins headed to Cantu
Doron Perkins - Maccabi Electra_31687With what could turn out to be exquisite timing, Bennet Cantu announced Saturday that combo guard Doron Perkins would join the club, pending medical exams on Monday, just a couple days before the Turkish Airlines Euroleague signing deadline for the season. If he's registered and ready to play, Perkins (1.89 meters, 28 years old) could appear on Thursday in Tel Aviv against his sole former Euroleague team, Maccabi Electra, in what stacks up as a do-or-die struggle for a playoff spot. Perkins started 19 of 19 games for Maccabi last season before a knee injury in Game 3 of the playoffs knocked him out long-term. Maccabi continued to the Final Four and lost the title game to Panathinaikos, with Perkins watching in street clothes. Over two seasons with Maccabi, Perkins was remarkably consistent, averaging 9.4 points, 3.5 assists and 1.4 steals in 25 minutes per game. He was considered one of the top on-the-ball defenders in the competition. Cantu's statement on Saturday said that Perkins would arrive on Sunday and that "Monday he'll have the medical exams to check his full recovery after the injury." Cantu defeated Maccabi 82-74 on Thursday to take over second place in Top 16 Group H with a 2-1 record. Maccabi is 1-2 and in third place, meaning that a loss in the rematch next week would put the Israeli powerhouse in danger of missing the playoffs for just the second time in nine seasons.
