Unicaja announced the dismissal of head coach Chus Mateo on Monday, two weeks after failing to reach the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Playoffs. Mateo, 43, had taken over the Unicaja bench 14 months ago, prior to last season's Top 16, when the team went 1-5 and also failed to qualify for the playoffs. This season, after finishing 5-5 in the regular season, Unicaja failed to win a game in the Top 16, making it just the third team in six season to go 0-6 in the phase. Mateo had been an assistant in both Real Madrid and Unicaja before taking his first head coaching jobs with Spanish teams Zaragoza and Fuenlabrada between 2006 and 2010. Unicaja said in the announcement that assistant coach Francisco Aurioles will a take over the bench on an interim basis.
