WHAT'S NEW
Turkish Airlines Euroleague debutant completely rebuilt its roster for its first crack at Europe’s premier basketball competition, starting from the top by hiring three-time Euroleague champion Bozidar Maljkovic as head coach. The club also infused loads of experience with nine new players, including veteran center Luksa Andric, forwards Marko Tomas, Predrag Suput and Mickael Gelabale, and shooting guard Bracy Wright. Playmaking duties will be in the hands of Marques Green and Vlado Ilievski, while swingman Luka Babic and power forward Goran Suton add depth and a spring of youth to the roster.
THE BACKCOURT
Ball-handlers Green and Ilievski are surrounded by some dangerous shooters - Tomas, Wright, Marino Bazdaric and Marko Car – and their ability to create open looks for said marksmen will be crucial for the team. Wright and Tomas are proven scorers and combo-guard Car has shown that he too can put up points in bunches, while club legend in-the-making Bazdaric is another scoring threat and the silent leader of the team, who is always looking to maximize his impact on both ends of the floor. Rookie Babic adds depth and could play his way into meaningful minutes as the season progresses. Ilievski offers clutch, silent leadership and court sense.
THE FRONTCOURT
Eurocup champion Gelabale brings important versatility and athleticism to the wings; Suput will be mostly used at power forward where he brings his outside shooting and ability to bang inside on both ends of the floor. Andric will be a central piece on Cedevita's front line with his great speed and shooting touch for a big man, and he should get lots of help in the paint from Suton and Bilan who, although both rookies, should have significant roles with their abilities to dominate around the rim and on the boards.
OUTLOOK
Cedevita has brought a lot of experience to shorten its adaptation period to the Euroleague. The roster also has pieces that can both score and hustle on defense, and it has size in the paint. With several players in their primes, if they play at their best, the ingredients are there for Coach Maljkovic to leave his mark on the Euroleague once again.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Marko Tomas
Once he recovers from preseason heel surgery, Cedevita will get a lift from a swingman who has grown into one of the best defensive players in the competition. However, even before becoming elite defender, Tomas was a proven scorer with outstanding offensive repertoire, and Cedevita will count on him to be a go-to-guy. |
