Panathinaikos inks veteran guard Athinaiou

Panathinaikos OPAP Athens added backcourt depth by signing a one-year contract with veteran guard Ioannis Athinaiou, the club announced on Monday. Athinaiou (1.93 meters, 31 years old) split last season between PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece and Fos-Provence in France. With PAOK he averaged 4.6 points and 2.1 assists in the Greek League games, while posting 7.7 points, 2.6 assists and 2.2 rebounds in Basketball Champions League. With Fos-Provence he posted 6.5 points, 3.1 assists and 1.8 rebounds in the French League. Athinaiou is now set to make his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague return, after playing two seasons with Olympiacos Piraeus from 2015 to 2017, and making 25 appearances in competition in a limited fashion. During his career, Athinaiou has also played with Ilysiakos, Panionios, KAO Dramas, Aris Thessaloniki and AEK Athens in his native Greece, and had brief stints with Eskisehir in Turkey and AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan in Italy. Athinaiou is also a member of the Greek national team.
