Real Madrid announced on Thursday that longtime head coach Pablo Laso had agreed to a new contract that will keep him on Los Blancos' sidelines through the end of the 2020-21 season. Laso, 51, first took the reins in the Spanish capital in 2011 and the team has had nothing but success, reaching six EuroLeague Final Fours, four championships games and lifting the crown in both 2015 and 2018. Moreover, Laso was twice named the Alexander Gomelskiy EuroLeague Coach of the Year and has guided his team to five Spanish League championships, five Spanish Copa Del Reys, four Spanish SuperCups and the 2015 FIBA Intercontinental Cup. His exploits have cemented his status as one of the greatest coaches in Real history, which is quite a feat considering that the club is the winningest in European basketball history. After the completion of the contract, Laso will have reached a full decade as Real’s head coach, which would be third in club history behind only the legendary Pedro Ferrandiz and Lolo Sainz.

Laso previously coached a season each with AB Castello, Valencia and Cantabria and four with Gipuzkoa before he was first hired by Madrid. He made a name for himself on the court as one of the best Spanish point guards of his generation. Laso played from 1984 until his 2003 retirement. Laso spent the bulk of his career with Baskonia from his hometown of Vitoria Gasteiz, with which he won the Spanish Copa del Rey in 1995. He also played two seasons with Real, with which he lifted the 1997 Saporta Cup.
