Zalgiris minimized mistakes to win big

Zalgiris Kaunas head coach Sarunas Jasikevicius does not often get very happy after wins, but he was plenty satisfied after his team beat visiting Olympiacos Piraeus 94-69 on Tuesday night for their sixth win in the last eight games.

"I think this is a game where we really had a minimum of mental mistakes," Saras said in his post-game interview with EuroLeague TV.

His team committed 8 turnovers, including just 1 in the first half, compared to 17 by Olympiacos. It helped Zalgiris take the lead for good early in the first quarter and build a 14-point lead midway through the second. Zalgiris never allowed the visitors closer than 8 points the rest of the game and led by double digits the entire second half.

"We hit a lot of shots which helps tremendously," Jasikevicius acknowledged as Zalgiris had one its best shooting nights in the EuroLeague this century. Zalgiris tied its club record with 14 triples and did so on 63.6%, which tied for the club's third best this century. On the other hand, holding the opposition to just 69 points led to a 25-point win, the largest on its home floor this season, all to the thrill of the sold-out Zalgirio Arena.

"Slowly, slowly, we are getting to where we want to be. Now it is just a matter of continuing doing what we are doing," Jasikevicius said.

Next comes the ultimate test as Zalgiris visits league-leading Anadolu Efes Istanbul. And the Lithuanian champs must truly minimize their mental mistakes and make their shots to be in a position to claim another road win in Istanbul, where Zalgiris has defeated Efes in four straight games.
