Valencia Basket strengthened its backcourt by inking combo guard Martin Hermannsson to a multi-year deal, the club announced on Friday. Hermannsson (1.90 meters, 25 years old) arrives from ALBA Berlin, where he averaged 10.9 points on 86.0% free throw shooting and 4.8 assists in 27 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games last season, his debut campaign in the competition. He helped ALBA win the German League and Cup titles in 2020. He was MVP of the German Cup and averaged 14 points in the league finals as ALBA ended a 12-year drought as national club champion. In 2019, Hermannsson and ALBA reached the 7DAYS EuroCup Finals together, losing against Valencia.
Hermannsson started his career with KR Reykjavik of his native Iceland. He has also played for Long Island University in the NCAA, as well as for Etoile Charleville-Mezieres and Champagne Chalons-Reims Basket of France. He is also a regular member of the Icelandic national team. Hermannsson has long been on Valencia's radar, and vice-versa, since he visited his uncle, Jon Stefansson, a shooting guard who played for the club in two different seasons almost a decade apart, 2006-07 and 2015-16. Hermannsson and Valencia signed a two-year contract with an option for a third season.
