Panathinaikos OPAP Athens acquired a top defender by signing Howard Sant-Roos to a contract for the up-coming season and an option for 2021-21, the club announced Tuesday. Sant-Roos (2.00 meters, 29 years old), a 2018 EuroCup champion with Darussafaka Istanbul, joined CSKA Moscow during the 2019-20 season and averaged 5.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals in a reserve role. His 2.53 steals per 40-minutes would have ranked third in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague if he had played the minimum amount of games to qualify for the leader board.
Sant-Roos began the season AEK Athens, where he had played for a year and a half. Widely respected for his defense, Sant-Roos led the EuroCup during Darussafaka's championship season with 2.1 steals per game. The first Cuban to play in the EuroLeague this century, Sant-Roos has also played for Bernareggio, Broni and Casalpusterlengo in Italy, Braunschweig in Germany, and Nymburk in the Czech Republic. He helped AEK win the 2019 Intercontinental Cup and led Nymburk to Czech League crowns in 2016 and 2017.
