Abalde shows Real fans a glimpse of future

Real Madrid fans may have seen a glimpse of the future as small forward Alberto Abalde came off the bench to play a major role in getting his team a big victory in Round 10.

Abalde did a little bit of everything and ended up collecting a team-high 17 points in Real's 94-74 win over Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul. Abalde connected on 6 of 8 field goal attempts to go along with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals for a performance index rating of 22 as the Spanish powerhouse won its fifth straight game and improved to 6-4.

The 24-year-old Abalde joined Real in the off-season on a five-year contract after having spent the previous four seasons on the books with Valencia Basket. Abalde is originally a product of the Joventut Badalona youth ranks and helped that club win the 2013 Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament title.

Abalde kisses his right lower arm after scoring and Real fans should probably get used to seeing that sight. After totaling 18 points in about 52 minutes in his first three games of the season, Abalde reeled off four straight games with at least 10 points, twice playing at least 28 minutes. The last two of those games were victories.

Abalde did not produce as much offense in Real's two wins in Rounds 8 and 9. with 10 points total, but he did combine for 6 rebounds and 7 assists in those games.

He also showed that he can help a team win hardware as he averaged 5.4 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in Valencia's run to the 2018-19 7DAYS EuroCup title.

Real Madrid is slowly revamping its team after years of consistency within its roster. Young talents are close to playing a bigger role in the team while club stalwarts Rudy Fernadez, Felipe Reyes, Sergio Llull, Anthony Randolph and Jaycee Carroll are on the high sides of their careers.

Abalde is showing so far that he is one of the guys who can be one of the future leaders.
