OQT Kaunas: Slovenia roars into Tokyo berth
Slovenia stormed past host Lithuania 85-96 to capture a ticket to the basketball tournament at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Former EuroLeague MVP Luka Doncic was practically unstoppable with 31 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists for the winners. Jaka Blazic of Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana added 16 points for Slovenia and Mike Tobey contributed 13. Mantas Kalnietis scored 14 and Marius Grigonis tallied 10 points and 6 assists for Lithuania in defeat.
The teams battled shot for shot through the first half, which ended with the score knotted at 52-52. Doncic sent out 2 assists to Vlatko Cancar and another to Tobey on threes in a 0-9 start to the second quarter as Slovenia took the lead for good. Rokas Giedraitis of TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz capped a 10-0 Lithuania run to bring the hosts within 69-71 late in the third, but Slovenia responded with 14 unanswered points in a run that bridged the final two quarters to pull away for good. Blazic highlighted that run with 6 points. Lithuania never got closer than 9 points the rest of the way.
