Maccabi marked its 1,000th game in European competition

Maccabi Playtika marked a phenomenal accomplishment on Wednesday when it took the court against AS Monaco in Round 18 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. That game was the club's 1,000th in European competitions.

The six-time continental champion and nine-time European runner-up has played a total of 61 seasons in European competitions. Of those, 58 have been in the EuroLeague or the top-flight competition of that season.

Maccabi has played 973 games in Europe’s premier competition with a record of 577-396. The team’s 15 appearances in the EuroLeague Championship Game are second only to Real Madrid’s 18. It has also played 11 games in the Cup Winners’ Cup (6-5), 10 in the Korac Cup (5-5) and six in the 7DAYS EuroCup (2-4).

A 55-time Israeli champion, Maccabi has played against 116 clubs from 18 different countries. It has a winning record against 71 of them. The country whose teams have faced Maccabi the most is Italy, with 14 different clubs from that country sharing the court with Maccabi over the years. Maccabi has faced 10 clubs from France and Spain and nine each from Greece and Turkey.

The team Maccabi has played the most is Real Madrid with 63 clashes between them. Los Blancos have won 39 of them. Maccabi has faced FC Barcelona 46 times, CSKA Moscow 45 and Panathinaikos Athens 44.

Twenty different players have scored at least 1,000 points in a Maccabi uniform. The most recent addition to that club was Scottie Wilbekin last season. Miki Berkowitz is Maccabi’s all-time scoring leader with 3,581 points and the record for most points in a single game is 49 by Doron Jamchi against Limoges in 1991. The most points scored by a Maccabi player in a Turkish Airlines EuroLeague game is 37. Sarunas Jasikevicius did so against Zalgiris Kaunas in 2004 and Wilbekin matched that earlier this season.

Derrick Sharp played more games in a Maccabi uniform than any other player with 290. Nadav Henefeld is second with 222 and Berkowitz third with 201. Maccabi’s winningest coach is Pini Gershon with 113 victories on the sidelines. Zvi Sherf led Maccabi to 99 victories and David Blatt to 89. Current head coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos has 53.

Its all-time winning percentage at home is 76.9%, while on the road the team has won 42.5% of its games. Maccabi has played 40 overtime games and has a 25-15 record in those.

The club’s largest margin of victory in a EuroLeague regular-season game was 50 when it defeated Scavolini Pesaro 123-73 in November 2004. The largest victory in any competition was 143-43 over Achilleas Kaimakli of Cyprus in the 1984-85 qualifying rounds. The club scoring record is 145 against Brondby of Denmark in a September 1983 Champions Cup qualifying game.

Congratulations to Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv on its first 1,000 games in European competition!
