With its basketball section dating to 1928, AS Monaco boasts a long tradition in the sport. The team's first success came in 1950 with a second-place finish in the French top flight. After a few fallow years, Monaco returned to the first division by winning the second one in 1973. That decade also saw Monaco's first foray into international competition with a couple of Korac Cup outings, as well its first chance for a major trophy, frustrated by a loss to Limoges in the French Federation Cup Final in 1983. Monaco then suffered a dramatic slide in fortunes, dropping as far as the fourth division until a remarkable revival in the last few years. The club conquered the fourth, third and, finally, second divisions between 2012 and 2015 to rejoin the first. The 2015-16 campaign finally saw the red-and-white side claim its first serious title with a triumph in the Leaders Cup, a trophy it defended the following year. The 2017-18 season was Monaco's strongest yet, with a third consecutive Leaders Cup trophy complemented by runner-up finishes in both the French League and Basketball Champions League. In 2018-19 season Monaco made its 7DAYS EuroCup debut by winning its regular season group and reaching the final game of the Top 16 needing a win to reach the quarterfinals. Monaco fell at the hands of Rytas Vilnius, but bounced back by reaching a fifth-and-deciding game in the French playoff finals, where it lost to LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. Last season, Monaco advanced from the regular season in the EuroCup and then took first place in its Top 16 Group G to lock up home-court advantage in the quarterfinals, which ended up not being played. Monaco was atop the French League with a 21-4 record when it, too, ended abruptly. For the 2020-21 campaign, Monaco has brought back as head coach Zvezdan Mitrovic, who guided the club's promotion to the French League in 2015 and its rise to the status of a regular contender in the EuroCup.
