EWE Baskets Oldenburg is back in the EuroCup for the first time since 2016, in what will be the club's fifth campaign in the competition. Oldenburg comes off another strong German League campaign in which it finished second in the regular season with a 28-6 record behind strong performances from Rasid Mahalbasic, Will Cummings and of course, Rickey Paulding, who has been in the club since 2007 and holds most of its records. Oldenburg swept Telekom Bonn in the quarterfinals but, despite having the home-court advantage in the semifinals, ALBA stood in its way to the title series. Not playing in European competitions for the first time since 2008 and an early exit in the German Cup - it was eliminated by Science City Jena in the eighthfinals in early October - allowed Oldenburg to focus on the German League. The club bounced back from that German Cup elimination in style with stellar individual performances - Mahalbasic had four triple-doubles, including one in the playoffs, and Cummings averaged 25.2 points in the playoffs. Oldenburg knows what it takes to do well in the EuroCup and will try to do it again.

History

Basketball has been in the northwestern German town of Oldenburg since the Oldenburger Turnerbund athletics club opened its basketball section in 1954. It reached the top league in Germany in 1966 and was in and out of the top flight for the next three decades. Oldenburg waited until the turn of the millennium to establish itself as a legitimate force. The club got to the German playoff quarterfinals each season from 2003 until 2006, before jumping over the quarterfinal hurdle in 2008. It all clicked a year later, as Oldenburg edged Telekom Bonn in the final seconds of the last game of the finals on a Je'Kel Foster free throw to win its first German championship and book a ticket to the 2009-10 EuroLeague. Oldenburg won its first-ever EuroLeague game on the road against Prokom in Poland, but that proved to be its only triumph, too. The club debuted in the EuroCup in 2010-11 and after a couple of quieter domestic campaigns, it was back at its best in the 2012-13 season – taking third place in the FIBA EuroChallenge and then reaching the German League finals before losing to Brose Bamberg. Its return to the Eurocup in 2013-14 saw Oldenburg come within 1.6 seconds of a place in the Last 32, but Bilbao Basket ended its campaign in the regular season. Oldenburg also reached the German League semifinals before falling to eventual champion FC Bayern Munich in the maximum five games. The club again missed the Last 32 in the 2014-15 season by a very narrow margin. Nevertheless, Oldenburg finished the season strong and edged Brose to win the German Cup for the first time in club history. A year later, Oldenburg had its best-ever EuroCup campaign; it advanced past the regular season and Last 32 group stages before losing to Strasbourg in the eighthfinals on point difference. Oldenburg had another great run in the 2016-17 German League; it went all the way to the finals after downing both Medi Bayreuth and ratiopharm Ulm without the home-court advantage. Brose denied it another German League title. Oldenburg returned to the German League playoffs in each of the last two seasons and made it to the semifinals in 2019 before being stopped by ALBA Berlin. Oldenburg enters a new season with the desire to collect more trophies.
