Mbawke, Garrett lead Fiat to first-ever EuroCup win

In a back-and-forth battle that went down to the wire, Fiat Turin grabbed a valuable road win in its first-ever 7DAYS EuroCup game by edging Cedevita Zagreb 83-86 in the Croatian capital in Group A on Wednesday. Trevor Mbakwe led the winners with 20 points and missed but a single shot. Diante Garrett added 17 on 3-of-4 three-point shooting. Lamar Patterson had 15, 7 rebounds and 6 assists, while Antonio Iannuzzi chipped in 12 points for the winners. Demetris Nichols led Cedevita with 17 points. Andrija Stipanovic added 15 on 6-of-6 two-point shooting. Filip Kruslin had 12 more and Dzanan Musa 11 for the hosts. It all came down to the final minutes, when Garrett and Iannuzzi pushed Fiat into the lead. Sasha Vujacic hit free throws with 5 seconds left that allowed his team to start celebrating a historical win.

Even when Cedevita did not win the tip-off, it took Nichols just 13 seconds to get his team going with a three-pointer. Vujacic nailed a jumper and a three-pointer, getting help from Patterson and Mbakwe to give Fiat a 7-13 edge. Musa struck from downtown and contributed to a 7-0 run with a fastbreak layup for a 17-15 Cedevita lead. A corner triple by Valerio Mazzola gave Fiat the lead, 17-18, after 10 minutes. Cedevita found a new offensive threat as three-pointers by Kevin Murphy and Roko Ukic gave the hosts a 25-20 lead. Kruslin followed a triple with a stop-and-pop jumper, Stipanovic was unstoppable and Nichols insisted from downtown to make Turin call timeout at 37-25. Patterson and Garrett tried to change things for the guests but Stipanovic and Nichols kept their team fully in charge, 47-39, at halftime. Mbakwe and Patterson took over after the break and a layup by Deron Washington got Fiat as close as 53-50. Mbakwe kept pacing Fiat and managed to complete his team's comeback, 55-58, after a 2-12 run. Musa and Ukic brought Cedevita within 61-62 after 30 minutes. Cedevita improved its defense early in the fourth quarter and Ukic gave his team some fresh air, 69-66, with under 7 minutes left. Washington shined with a power layup and Garrett took over with back-to-back triples to force Cedevita to call timeout at 72-76. Iannuzzi and Patterson kept Fiat ahead but Nichols got Cedevita within 82-84 already in the final minute. Will Cherry collected a steal but picked up an offensive foul with 6 seconds left, after which Vujacic sealed the outcome from the foul line.

Fiat faces another EuroCup newcomer, Morabanc Andorra, next Tuesday. A day later, Cedevita Zagreb visits Darussafaka Istanbul.

"Turin is a good team but, for sure, we are a better team and we should have won not easily, but with a relaxed finish. We lost the chance to go up 20 points in the first half but stopped playing defense and they came back in the third quarter. They caught their rhythm, we relaxed a little bit and they punished us. Nothing new for us: one-on-one defense, offensive rebounds and after that, they made some lucky shots. In the end, we deserved to lose after the second half that we played. I don't look for excuses. The names don't play, the team plays. We are still too selfish on offense. Some players don't want to play defense, don't want to make fouls. We had some problems because a lot of our players came back from the national team or were injured. Roko Ukic and Willy Cherry played together for the first time tonight but we lost. Chris Johnson just arrived... We still need to feel ourselves to play like a team. We made too many mistakes and deserved to lose after our second half."
BANCHI, LUCA
Fiat Turin
“This is a special day for us. Torino came back to EuroCup after 31 years. We want to show everyone that we can compete at this level and we came to Zagreb to play against a quality team. We missed our game plan at the beginning when Cedevita played aggressive on defense, but we were better in the second half. We would like to play every night the way we played in the second half today. We know we are a new team in EuroCup and we are sort of an underdog, so we are happy.”

Players

STIPANOVIC, ANDRIJA
Cedevita Zagreb
"We expected to win and play a better game than last Sunday, but we could not hold the rhythm for 40 minutes. We made some stupis mistakes, which turned the game on Turin's side. I hope that, in the future, we will not make these kinds of mistakes and when we have a 10- or 12-point lead, we hold the game. We still didn't make even one practice together. This new player, Chris Johnson, just came now, but this is not an excuse. We must play better. I hope we will play better in the future."
IANNUZZI, ANTONIO
Fiat Turin
“This is the first time I played in the EuroCup and I am happy because we have won in our first EuroCup game. We didn’t start well, but we played much better in the second half.”
POETA, GIUSEPPE
Fiat Turin
“Great game and great win. We stood up at the first strike and it wasn't taken for granted because we were down by 12 or 14 points, but we stayed focused on the game. We played with patience and continuity, doing a great final quarter. All of us contributed in some way to this win and we are very happy about this result. That's it and now we must reset everything and start thinking about our next game.”
GARRETT, DIANTE
Fiat Turin
"We went back in the locker room after the first half and Coach talked to us about different things that we weren't doing. When we started the game, we kind of slacked off on defense and were not executing our offense. We executed a lot in the second half, stuck with it as a team on defense and came out with a victory. There are going to be ups and downs all year but we are going to learn from every game and hopefully, we will be on the upper scale of everything and just keep getting better. We have been together for the last two and a half months, in preseason, with a lot of practices, two a day. We all know each other. We have to put it all together as a team, as a union, as one, all being on the same page. If we can do that, it will help us a whole lot."
