Galatasaray Medical Park Istanbul confirmed its status as a pre-season favorite by going on the road to beat Trefl Sopot 65-94 in Poland on Tuesday in the first Group E game for each team. A blazing 0-13 start to the game for Galatasaray put Sopot on its heels. Sopot got back as close as 4 points before halftime, but suffered similar Galatasaray runs to start the third and fourth quarters as the visitors ran away to a big victory. Galatasaray had seven scorers post between 8 and 14 points, with Boni Ndong at the top of that scale. Ender Arslan added 13, Jamont Gordon 12, David Hawkins 11 and Milan Macvan 10 for the winners, who made 62% of their two-point shots (25 for 40) and 50% on threes (9 for 18). For Sopot, Filip Dylewicz made 4 of 6 threes for 14 points. Adam Waczynski added 13, 11 rebounds and 5 assists, while Michal Michalak scored 11 points.

Galatasaray sent a message from the start by storming to the game's first 13 points as all five of its starters scored at least once. After close to 5 minutes, Filip Dylewicz got Sopot on the scoreboard from downtown, but Hawkins and Macvan gave Galatasaray another 0-6 run before his second one made it 6-19. Waczynski finally joined Dylewicz in the scoring column with a put-back, although Galatasaray still dominated with an 8-23 lead after 10 minutes. But not much longer. Although Dylewicz soon drilled his third three-pointer, a different Sopot team came out for the second quarter, pressuring Galatasaray up and down the floor during a 15-5 run that featured 2 triples and 8 points by Michal Michalak. With the battle rejoined, Sopot stayed within 33-39 before 4 free throws by Ndong preceded another by Macvan and his three-pointer to close the half as Galatasaray recouped a double-digit difference, 36-47, at the break.

Galatasaray kept moving ahead with another triple by Arslan and shorter shots by Gordon for a 40-54 lead. They were interrupted by a basket from Waczynski before another burst started with 5 points from Hawkins en route to a 42-61 score. Furkan Aldemir got in on the act soon and Engin Atsur finished the quarter with a triple that had Galatasaray comfortably in front, 51-68, after 30 minutes. Akyol broke the game open for good with 8 points himself in a 4-10 run to open the final quarter for Galatasaray by boosting the difference to 55-78. From there the teams traded baskets as to the finish as Galatasaray's shooting percentages stayed high and the visitors rained on the Eurocup opener for Sopot and its fans.

TABAK, ZAN
Trefl Sopot
"We started the game on the wrong foot. From the beginning of the game, we showed too much respect to Galatasaray. We are not a team that plays passive in defense. Normally we try to attack the other team. Because of that respect, we didn’t do that. The rest of the game was a clear physical, technical and tactical dominance from Galatasaray. We showed some signs of life, but we didn’t succeed in things we are used to doing. The worst thing about the game was that we didn’t play our basketball. We didn’t play what we practiced."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Galatasaray Medical Park
" We started the game as we wanted. We played very good defense. We were able to close the pick-and-roll offense from Trefl point guard Frank Turner. We were successful in stopping their open court basketball. We had also balance in offense. Everything was perfect for us. In the second quarter, when the reserves came in, we lost our rhythm, especially on defense. We allowed 28 points and Sopot made a very high percentage of three-point shots. In the second half we played our regular basketball. We know that we have a great roster and we will try to win the Eurocup. Today I think we showed that we are one of two candidates to win this competition. "

Players

HARRINGTON, JUNIOR
Trefl Sopot
"We came out today and didn’t play the basketball that we normally practice. We were playing against an experienced team with a lot of great players, so we needed to take advantage of every opportunity we got. Every time we made a mistake, they made us pay for it. That’s the difference when you start to play in these types of games. You have to be ready to play for 40 minutes. Even though we lost, I think it was a good experience. Now we know how it is going to be and how serious and focused we need to be. I know the next game will be better."
MACVAN, MILAN
Galatasaray Medical Park
"I think we started very well in this competition. We played a good game. Everything went as we planned. Hopefully we will win all the games on our home court; then this win will mean something. I’m happy that we were able to break away immediately. It gave us a very good start in a race to advance to the next round. "
