Without top scorer, Reggio Emilia eliminates Jerusalem

Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia remained in the hunt for a spot in the Top 16 with a 66-79 road win on Wednesday at Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem that eliminated the home team. Chris Wright collected 19 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists and 3 steals as Reggio Emilia improved to 4-5 despite leading scorer Amedeo Della Valle missing the game. Manuchar Markoishvili, James White and Jalen Reynolds all added 13 points with Reynolds also chipping in 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Reggio Emilia turned the ball over just 9 times in the game and shut down Jerusalem in the fourth quarter, allowing just 6 points in the final 10 minutes. Jerusalem dropped to 2-7 despite a career high 27 points from Jerome Dyson while Roland Roberts collected 14 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Dyson put the hosts on the board first and it was 4-0 after nearly 3 minutes before Reggio Emilia finally scored through White. Chris Wright gave the Italian team its first lead 4-5. Dyson continued his red-hot first quarter with two three-pointers and a layup for 12 points and a 16-10 lead. Jerusalem went cold though and a Chris Wright three-ball started an 0-10 spurt over 4 minutes to go up 16-20. It was 18-20 after 10 minutes. Lior Eliyahu started the second quarter with a basket and his second score put Jerusalem up 24-23. Two offensive rebounds-put backs and a Markoishvili three-ball pushed Reggio Emilia back ahead. Eliyahu dished two nice assists to Dyson and Roberts at the one end while White hit five points at the other end in giving the guests a 33-37 advantage. Roberts connected on an alley-oop three-point play and putback but Jerusalem still trailed at the break 40-41.

Dyson did not slow down in the second half with two long three-pointers as Jerusalem rushed ahead 50-43. And it was 55-48 after a triple from Stratos Perperoglou. Reggio Emilia came right back with the next six points including a White dunk. Roberts answered with a block and dunk for a 60-56 advantage only to see Reggio Emilia score the final six points with Landing Sane’s tip-in making it 60-62 after three quarters. Both teams picked up the defensive intensity and neither could score until Yogev Ohayon’s fast break layup with 6:23 minutes left in the game to tie it 62-62. But Jerusalem could not score over the next three minutes and Reynolds picked up a steal and big dunk and Chris Wright knocked down a triple in a 0-9 spurt to lead 62-71. Jerusalem did get the next four points but then failed to score in the final 2:17 as the guests ran away in the end.

"We are very disappointed. The energy was not there and in those kind of games with the backs to the wall we had to show more. We will have to evaluate ourselves and fix our team so we can deal with future challenges."
MENETTI, MASSIMILIANO
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"We played a tough game. We trusted that we could play a good game. It was a real upset how the Lietkabelis game finished. We trusted for 40 minutes and played tough defense in the second half and we played in a smart way together on offense. That’s the way to win an important game like this."
