Zenit downs Buducnost on Markovic’s game-winner

Zenit St. Petersburg moved into first place in Group C by edging Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 95-97 on Stefan Markovic’s buzzer-beater. Zenit improved to 5-2 in Group C and will win the group if it defeats Unicaja Malaga at home next week. Buducnost fell to 0-7. Ryan Toolson made 5-of-1 three-pointers and scored 32 points for the winners, Kyle Landry added 15 points, Markovic tallied 12 points and 6 assists, Janis Timma had 11 points and Pavel Sergeev 10. Petar Popovic and Sead Sehovic scored 12 points apiece for Buducnost, Bojan Subotic, Shawn James and Suad Sehovic netted 11 each and Marcus Williams totaled 10 points and 10 assists in defeat.

After a tight start, Subotic heated up to put the hosts ahead 20-14, but Landry answered with a triple and Trevor Mbakwe’s first basket made it 23-22 after 10 minutes. Toolson shot Zenit ahead early in the second quarter and the lead would change hands six more times before Sead Sehovic’s free throws gave Buducnost a 46-45 edge at halftime. With the game tied 48-48, Toolson scored twice in a 0-11 Zenit run to take control and the lead reached 52-67 on another Toolson triple. Buducnost did not relent and Suad Sehovic and Subotic led a 13-2 run to close the gap. Williams made it 70-71 through three quarters. James’s three-point play completed the Buducnost comeback for a 73-71 lead at the start of the fourth quarter. A Nemanja Gordic three put the hosts up 78-73, but Timma and Toolson nailed threes as Zenit responded with 10 unanswered points. Toolson was fouled shooting a three-pointer and made all 3 free throws for an 80-88 Zenit lead with five minutes remaining. Nemanja Vranjes took control with a pair of threes and 2 free throws as the home team regained the lead, 93-92. The game came down to the wire; Popovic evened the score at 95-95, bur Zenit called timeout to set up a final possession and Markovic hit the game-winner at the buzzer.

Head Coaches

ZOUROS, ILIAS
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"Congratulations to my players. I am very proud of them. We had very big problems before the game, but we were close to winning. In the last seconds we decided to play defense, to learn to play defense, and Markovic scored. I shared time among my players, trying to keep them fresh for the next game in the ABA League."
KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"First of all I told my players: You have to be mentally ready for this game, because Buducnost VOLI could play a little be relaxed. All game we fought against ourselves. We gave Buducnost chances to fill the game, they could play because of that. Buducnost VOLI has good players, but we won and we have a good chance to be the leader of the group."

Players

SEHOVIC, SEAD
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"As we said, the game was meaningless, because we cannot qualify for the second round. However, game was very important to prepare for important matches such as the one with [Crvena Zvezda] on Sunday in the ABA league. Against Zenit was very difficult to play, because they have great freedom in the game, playing very quickly with a lot of shots. They had a very good shooting percentage tonight."
MARKOVIC, STEFAN
Zenit St Petersburg
"Good game, we knew that Buducnost VOLI has nothing to lose. They have a new coach, want to improve the game and show that they deserve to be in this competition. We were expecting a difficult match and so it was. In the end, we were able to draw for us a very important win in order to remain in the race for first place."
