UNICS finishes second after winning in Turin

UNICS Kazan wrapped up second place in Group A with a 72-79 victory over Fiat Turin PalaRuffini on Tuesday evening. Melvin Ejim posted 17 points and 8 rebounds and Stephane Lasme scored 16 points on perfect shooting as UNICS improved to 7-3 to rank behind only Darussafaka Istanbul in their group at the end of the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season. Fiat, which had also previously clinched a Top 16 berth, slipped to 5-5 and will finish third if Cedevita Zagreb loses its Round 10 game against Levallois Metropolitans on Wednesday and fourth if Cedevita wins. UNICS used a strong finish to the second quarter to lead by 7 at halftime and boosted that margin to as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter to wrap up the victory. Vladislav Trushkin added 13 points off the bench for the winners. Deron Washington paced Fiat with 17 points, Lamar Patterson scored 15 and Diante Garrett recorded 10 points, 5 assists and 3 steals in defeat.

The pace was fast early, with a Washington three-pointer putting the hosts up 8-4. Lasme dominated inside and his slam tied it at 14-14 and gave him 10 points in six and a half minutes. Patterson free throws for Fiat and Ejim’s layup for UNICS ended the first quarter with the score tied 16-16. Trushkin edged UNICS in front to start the second quarter, but a Garrett banked-in triple put the hosts up 25-24 midway through the quarter. Trent Lockett’s three-point play, a Lasme jumper and Maurice Ndour’s steal and free throws helped UNICS jump ahead. Lockett’s tip-in made it 30-37 and the visitors took a 32-39 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

Fiat came out hot and rallied to within 3 just two minutes into the second half. UNICS scored the next 6 points and made it a double-digit margin, 43-53, on Jamar Smith’s second three-pointer. The lead reached 12 and despite a three-point play by Patterson and Giuseppe Poeta free throws, UNICS finished the third quarter with a 50-61 cushion. UNICS looked to put the game away as Ndour’s alley-oop slam made it a 15-point game early in the fourth. Fiat did not quit and closed within 63-72 on a Washington triple with less than three minutes remaining. After a timeout, Ejim beat the shot-clock buzzer with a three-pointer and a reverse layup by Quino Colom and a blocked shot by Lasme secured the victory.

"We have to congratulate Kazan on the win. I think they played a very solid game. Our approach was okay, unfortunately not enough energy to compete against such an athletic team. In the second period we struggled a lot rebounding. Of course this was not the way to finish our defensive effort. Now it’s time to look ahead and we are very happy to play the Top 16 in just a few days. After the game in Trento it will be time to start over a new group, a new adventure and we will try to approach it with the same enthusiasm and the same energy."

" It was a good win against a good team. Torino is a strong team; its last results show that against Darussafaka. They beat big teams like Armani. On their home court they play with confidence. It was very important for us to control their up-and-down game, because they are extremely dangerous in the open court. So it was very important for us to control this by going five on five, having rational [shots], not to be in a rush, not to make turnovers was very important and in that way not to risk the win. We have good moments, we can play a team game like we did today. I want to maintain this team spirit and ball movement. We want to stabilize ourself and have this good performance last, because we have very often the symptom of losing big differences. So we have good points and bad points and need to work."

"It wasn’t a normal game, it was a very important game for us. We wanted to lock in that second place in the group. We came focused, we focused on our defense and the rest took care of itself."
