CSKA downs Bayern, stays undefeated

CSKA Moscow remained undefeated in the 2019-20 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season after downing FC Bayern Munich 79-68 in the Russian capital on Thursday. CSKA improved to 2-0 in the standings while Bayern dropped to 1-1. Will Clyburn led the winners with 15 points and Johannes Voigtmann and Joel Bolomboy each scored 10 for CSKA. Voigtmann added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Greg Monroe paced Bayern with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Nihad Dedovic added 12 points and Danilo Barthel 10. Voigtmann and Darrun Hilliard each struck twice from downtown in the first quarter, helping CSKA get a 22-18 edge after 10 minutes. Clyburn and an outstanding Bolomboy allowed the hosts to boost their margin to 43-29. Barthel and Paul Zipser brought Bayern closer, 47-40, at halftime. Dedovic led an 0-8 run that brought Bayern within 50-48, however, Nikita Kurbanov and Andrey Vorontsevich fueled a 9-0 run, allowing CSKA to establish a 60-50 cushion after 30 minutes. CSKA boosted its margin to 77-60 and cruised to a convincing home win.

Barthel got Bayern going with a turnaround jumper that Hilliard bettered with a triple for a 3-2 CSKA lead. Kyle Hines dunked and a corner three-pointer by Voigtmann kept the hosts ahead, 8-5. Maodo Lo followed a bomb from downtown with an acrobatic layup and Monroe added a layup and a dunk that put Bayern ahead, 13-14. Hilliard downed his second three-pointer, Vladimir Lucic and Hines traded layups and a jumper by DeMarcus Nelson tied it at 18-18. Bolomboy and Vorontsevich gave CSKA a 22-18 edge after 10 minutes. Janis Strelnieks struck from beyond the arc and Bolomboy added a jump hook, but Petteri Koponen singlehandedly kept Bayern within 27-23. CSKA found a new go-to guy in Clyburn, whose dunk caused the guests to call timeout at 31-25. Monroe and Dedovic tried to change things for Bayern, but a red-hot Bolomboy buried a pair of three-pointers to make it a double-digit game, 39-29. Voigtmann added a put-back layup and fed Clyburn for a dunk that sent Bayern to call timeout at 43-29. Dedovic and Zipser rescued Bayern and a close basket by Barthel brought the visitors within 47-40 at halftime. Barthel scored in the low post soon after the break, but Kurbanov improved on that with a three-pointer. Dedovic hit a floater and followed Lo's layup with a fast break basket to get Bayern within 50-48. Kurbanov insisted from downtown, igniting a 9-0 run that Vorontsevich capped with a layup to restore a 59-48 CSKA lead. Koponen sank a jumper and a free throw by Clyburn fixed the score at 60-50 after 30 minutes. Ron Baker scored in penetration early in the fourth quarter and Vorontsevich added a three-pointer for a 65-50 CSKA lead. Baker joined the three-point showdown, but Dedovic and Monroe gave Bayern hope at 70-58 with less than 6 minutes left. CSKA improved its defense after a timeout and a layup by Hines sealed the outcome, 74-58, way before the final buzzer.

Pivotal performer

Bolomboy did a little bit of everything in what was one of his gest games in the EuroLeague until now. He struck twice from beyond the arc and finished the game with a career-high 10 points. Bolomboy added 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 fouls drawn for a career-high PIR of 12.

Game-changing moment

Bayern rallied from a 14-point deficit to get within 50-48 midway through the third quarter. CSKA improved its defense, Kurbanov hit a triple, Voigtmann and James scored around the basket and Vorontsevich soon gave CSKA a 59-48 lead, which the hosts handled well for the rest of the game.

Stellar stat

CSKA outrebounded Bayern 40-34, pulling down 16 offensive boards. CSKA did not allow Bayern to get any offensive rebounds in the first half, which helped the hosts build a 7-point halftime lead. CSKA also committed just 9 turnovers.

Head Coaches

ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"For me, my coaching staff and everybody, every game is special; it is a EuroLeague game. I am happy that we stepped up and kind of showed good character on both ends, offensively and defensively. This is actually our target right now. Early on the season, we are building something. We are building our character, some bonds that we will need afterward. When I say bonds, I am talking about basketball bonds, defensively and offensively. Of course, we had our lapses and we tried to cut them, but I think that today we did a pretty good job."

Players

CLYBURN, WILL
CSKA Moscow
"It is great to be back at Megasport, being back in front of our fans, in our arena, playing in front of them. It is always great to get a win; we have to build on this and continue going forward. It was just another game in Megasport and we need to protect our home-court advantage. That was the end of that. We have been working since pre-season on finding our identity. Defensively, we were there today and want to continue being there for the rest of the year. It is not going always going to be an offensive game, so defensively, we have to be there all the time."
VOIGTMANN, JOHANNES
CSKA Moscow
"It was always special [to play against a German club], to see familiar faces and play against guys who I play in the national team with. It is nice and it is always nice to get a win. For some stretches, we played pretty good basketball. We moved the ball and I think we missed a lot of open shots - that is why it was pretty close at the end. Overall, we did good on offense and did a pretty good job on defense."
MONROE, GREG
FC Bayern Munich
"CSKA is a very good team, they played very physical and helped each other in defense. We have to play more aggressively, the EuroLeague is a high-class league and very physical. But we have a good team and we will be better soon. Today we wasn’t good in rebounding and we had too many turnovers, that was the difference."
