Hendrix powers Galatasaray past Jerusalem and into second place

Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul secured second place in Group B by breezing to an 87-68 victory over Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem. The second quarter was the key, with Galatasaray enjoying a 25-12 run to establish an insurmountable lead and ensure a 5-5 finish to the regular season, leaving Jerusalem to conclude its campaign with a 2-8 record. The hosts had an outstanding performance from Richard Hendrix, who combined 14 points with 12 rebounds. Dwight Hardy and DaJuan Summers both scored 13, Alex Renfroe netted 12 and Scotty Hopson flirted with a triple-double as he registered 7 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Jerusalem’s challenge was led by 13 points for Tarance Kinsey, with Jerome Dyson and Lior Eliyahu both scoring 12, but the visiting team paid the price for being out-rebounded 37-25 and making just 1 of 12 three-point attempts.

Jerusalem raced out to a 0-7 lead as Dyson netted 5 points, but a pair of buckets from Ege Arar allowed Galatasaray to come straight back. The visitors surged ahead again as Kinsey and Eliyahu came to the fore, but a triple from Jordan Taylor helped Galatasaray make it 22-23 at the end of the first. Hopson hit a triple early in the second to make it 25-25, and the home team then grabbed its first lead as Hendrix scored from close range. That soon escalated into a 20-4 run with Hendrix and Summers dominating and stretching the advantage beyond double figures. Mehmet Yagmur joined the three-point shooting fun, and it was 47-35 at the break.

Hardy scored his third triple to protect the advantage early in the second half, before Jerusalem reduced it to a single-digit deficit behind a pair of baskets apiece for Eliyahu and Dyson. Consecutive buckets for Hendrix reasserted Galatasaray’s dominance, and a two-handed slam from Hopson was the highlight as the home team led 67-52 after three quarters. Jerusalem briefly threatened a comeback with a 2-10 run at the start of the fourth, but a triple and driving layup from Renfroe put the outcome beyond doubt and Galatasaray cruised home.

Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"We came from a long way. After starting 0-4, we won five of the last six games. We could have even won six of six. I want to congratulate my players for grinding their way into the second place and qualifying. We never gave up and will never give up. We are not afraid of anyone in the next round because we are Galatasaray and that's how we should approach."
MAOR, MODY
Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem
"We did a good job in the first and third quarters. There are some moments in the game where I am pleased with my team, but we couldn't extend those moments to the entirety of the game. That was the reason we lost. Obviously, that wasn't what we expected at Hapoel Jerusalem when we started the EuroCup this season. This is a big disappointment for us, but we will move forward and work to keep improving."
