Maccabi Haifa Bazan improved to 4-1 in Group G and grabbed its fourth consecutive win - three of them on the road - by rallying from a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat Kalev Cramo Tallinn 64-68 in the Estonian capital on Wednesday. Donta Smith paced the winners with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Brian Randle added 15 points while Ike Ofoegbu had 13 for Haifa. Ty Abbott led Kalev with 14 points. Rain Veideman added 11 while Bamba Fall had 10 for the hosts, which dropped to 0-5. Kalev used an early 13-0 run to get a 23-15 margin after 10 minutes and extended it to 45-28 at halftime. Haifa improved its defense after the break and found a go-to guy in Smith but Kalev still led 55-46 with 8 minutes remaining. Smith, Randle and Ofoegbu combined for all points in a 0-10 run that put Haifa ahead, 55-56. Kalev regained the lead, 60-56, but Smith and Randle led a 0-9 run which sealed the outcome down the stretch, allowing Haifa to get closer to the Last 32.

Frank Elegar got Kalev going with free throws but Moran Roth and Randle soon gave Haifa a 2-6 lead. Veideman and Abbott combined for 11 points in a 13-0 Kalev run which gave the hosts a 15-6 margin. Smith followed a layup with a slam but three-pointers by Abbott and Vlad Moldoveanu made it a double-digit game, 23-12. A layup-plus-foul by Ofoegbu kept Haifa within 23-15 after 10 minutes. Dagan Yizvori struck from downtown but a 9-0 run that Tanel Sokk capped with a layup seemed to break the game open, 32-18. Smith kept pacing Haifa but Elegar and Fall kept Kalev way ahead, 39-22. Smith and Ofoegbu combined for 6-of-6 free throws but Indrek Kajupank and Elegar restored a 45-28 Kalev margin at halftime. Haifa improved its defense after the break and a dunk by Randle gave the guests hope at 45-34. Veideman stepped up with a slam but Randle and Roth got Haifa within single digits, 47-39. Fall and Moldoveanu tried to change things for Kalev but Ben Reis made it a seven-point game, 51-44, after 30 minutes. Abbott scored early in the fourth quarter but Smith, Randle and Ofoegbu combined for all points in a 0-10 run that completed the guests' comeback, 55-56, with under 4 minutes left. Abbott sank a triple and Veideman added free throws for a 60-56 Kalev edge but Ofoegbu scored down low, Smith dunked twice and a three-point play by Randle gave Haifa a 60-65 edge, after a 0-9 run. Sokk shined with consecutive baskets, Randle dunked but Moldoveanu and Veideman missed respective shot from downtown to tie the game. A free throw by Smith allowed Haifa to seal a big win in come-from-behind fashion!

Head Coaches

VARRAK, ALAR
Kalev Cramo Tallinn
"We didn't play bad. But in the second half we lost our aggressiveness and lost our self-confidence. We kind of stopped playing."
FRANCO, DANNY
Maccabi Haifa Bazan
"We didn't come in the right mode to play. I think Tallin's record fooled us and they are a lot better than their results. I'm happy we knew at halftime to change our mode and to be down 17 points to going up 5 points with less than a minute. We showed a lot of character tonight. We held our opponent to 19 points in the second half, which is our best defensive half."

Players

VEIDEMAN, RAIN
Kalev Cramo Tallinn
"We collapsed in the second half totally. Maccabi played a more aggressive second half and we looked to score from under the basket too much. Our guards stayed too passive. We need to find a way to show a good game for all 40 minutes."
RANDLE, BRIAN
Maccabi Haifa Bazan
"We have a resilient team. We have guys who love to play basketball. We all have a great chemistry and have a good feel for one another. Thank goodness we were able to get a great victory on the road."
