Vargas shines as ALBA routs RETAbet

ALBA Berlin routed RETAbet Bilbao Basket 86-68 on Wednesday at Mercedes-Benz Arena in the latter’s final game of the 7DAYS EuroCup season. Akeem Vargas scored a career-high 18 points to pace the winners, who were already assured third place in Group C before the game started. ALBA improved to 6-4, while RETAbet finished its EuroCup campaign with a 2-8 record and fifth in the group. The hosts led from start to finish with the margin reaching 27 in the second quarter before RETAbet fought back with a 2-19 run that bridged the second and third quarters and eventually drew the visitor within 9, but ALBA regrouped and cruised to victory. Marius Grigonas added 12 points, Dennis Clifford posted 11 points and 11 rebounds, Luke Sikma also scored 11 and Tim Schneider had 10. ALBA made half of its 22 three-point attempts in one of the keys to the win. Alex Mumbru made history by scoring 12 points in defeat and moving into third place on the EuroCup’s career scoring charts with 1,192 points. Dejan Todorovic also scored 12 and Devin Thomas added 11 points and 8 rebounds. Axel Hervelle, playing in his 100th game in the competition, scored 7 points in less than seven minutes before leaving with an injury.

ALBA scored the game’s first two baskets and led 9-2 after Stefan Peno set up Sikma for an alley-oop. Hervelle kept RETAbet alive by scoring the team’s first 7 points, but Vargas kept the hosts rolling. He reached 10 individual points when he sank free throws and Schneider also scored from the line for a double-digit lead, 19-9. Todorovic sank 4 free throws to help RETAbet halve its deficit, which stood at 23-16 after 10 minutes. Clifford scored the first two baskets of the second quarter and Peyton Siva dunked before RETAbet called timeout down 13. However ALBA remained in control as Siva’s triple doubled the score, 32-16. Sikma capped an 11-0 ALBA start to the quarter before Mumbru ended the RETAbet drought. Sikma continued stretching the lead with a triple than made it 41-20. Vargas made a pair of threes and Joshiko Saibou added a steal and layup for a 51-24 advantage. Javi Salgado provided a spark for RETAbet with 5 quick points to help the visitors close the gap to 51-31 at the break.

Mumbru started the second half with a pair of three-pointers, which saw him climb into third place on the scoring list. Todorovic scored on the break as the visitors rallied to 53-39. Pere Tomas free throws capped a 2-12 start to the third quarter as RETAbet clawed its way to within 10. Todorovic free throws made it 58-49, but Schneider hit back with a couple of triples as ALBA resumed control and led 70-56 at the end of the quarter. RETAbet continued to play hard and Thomas made it as close as 77-66, but the outcome was never in doubt and ALBA scored the next 9 points to ensure it could enjoy the final two minutes.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
ALBA Berlin
"It can be very difficult to play if the result has no meaning for the qualification of both teams. So I am very happy about the win and how my team played. Also considering that we have a lot of problems. Peyton Siva is still not at a hundred percent and we are missing two important players for the next weeks with Spencer Butterfield and Bogdan Radosavljevic. Also some of my players are playing in the first division for the first time. Therefore it is sometimes difficult for us to maintain the right intensity."
MRSIC, VELJKO
RETAbet Bilbao Basket
"We didn’t show up at the beginning of the game. We played a really bad first half and then in the second half we tried to get better. We played much better on defense, but we didn’t have enough energy to continue after five or six minutes when we were down by 9. Then we went down again. To come back after this minus-20 is very difficult. Now we have to try to continue our improvement."

Players

NIKIC, KRESIMIR
ALBA Berlin
"ALBA I was prepared to play because [Radosavljevic] is injured and he is out now, so we have only one center now, Dennis [Clifford]. So I was prepared, but still to play at this level, on the first team in the EuroCup, without so much experience. I am thankful that coach gave me some chances even though I had some mistakes. I am happy."
CLIFFORD, DENNIS
ALBA Berlin
"We had good focus, good intensity. After that slump we had, like the last two weeks we have been trying to focus on every game as an individual game. I think we brought a lot of energy and we did the things we were practicing. All in all it was a pretty good effort all around."
HAMMINK, SHANE
RETAbet Bilbao Basket
"We just didn’t play well. Berlin played really well and we just didn’t. That’s really it. [At halftime, coach said] just work harder as a team, play better defense, play better as a team."
