Hanzevast Capitals registered its first win in Group C by edging Spirou Basket 79-73 in Groningen, the Netherlands on Tuesday night. Hanzevast improved to 1-4 while Charleroi stayed fourth at 2-3. Alton Mason led the winners with 16 points. Dwayne Archbold added 15, Kitwana Rhymer had 13 while Rogier Jansen got 11 for the Capitals. Wes Wilkinson had 15 points for Spirou, Tremmell Darden added 13 and Adam Hall 10. Charleroi opened the game with a 0-9 run but Mason and Archbold allowed the Capitals to get a 24-22 lead after 10 minutes. A 10-2 run allowed the Capitals to get a 37-30 lead, but Charleroi fired back to get within 41-40 at the break. Charleroi trailed all the wat in the second half, but Jonathan Tabu still got the guests close, 53-52, after 30 minutes. Jansen and Mason fueled a 11-0 run that put the Capitals ahead for good, as even when Spirou managed to make it a two-point game at 72-70, it could not complete its comeback.
Hanzevast committed 2 quick turnovers in the opening minute. Meanwhile, Darden fed Andre Riddick for a layup and added consecutive baskets in a 0-9 run that Hamilton capped with a triple. Darden kept pacing Spirou, but Rhymer and Mason brought the Capitals back to life, 14-16. Mason capped a 8-0 run with free throws to give the hosts their first lead at 18-16. An outstanding Archbold and Guido Grunheid allowed Hanzevast to extend its lead to 24-22 after 10 minutes. Wilkinson stepped up with consecutive baskets early in the second quarter while Roel Moors score to put Spirou back ahead, 27-28. Rhymer answered with 4 quick points, igniting a 10-2 run that Grunheid capped with a basket off a steal to make Spirou call timeout at 37-30. Wilkinson brought the guests back in the game while a three-point play by Cristophe Beghin tied it at 40-40, but a free throw by Kelvin Melson made the Capitals get a 41-40 halftime edge. Both teams slowed the game tempo after the break, as a basket by Mason and a triple by Archbold allowed Hanzevast to get a 47-42 lead. Tabu and Riddick tried to keep Spirou in the game, but Meijer and Grunheid fueled a 6-0 run that made it a seven-point game, 53-46. Darden and Tabu brought the guests within 53-52 after 30 minutes. Spirou struggled to score early in the fourth quarter, allowing Hanzevast to break the game open. Jansen had 4 points in an 11-0 run that Mason capped with a big triple that boosted the hosts' lead to 64-52. Riddick and Hamilton stepped up for Spirou while free throws by Moors got the guests within 67-59. Jansen scored and Mason hit a critical triple, but Darden and Hamilton got Spirou within 72-70. Meijer hit a free throw while Darden missed a game-tying three-point shot, allowing Hanzevast to celebrate its first ULEB Cup win this season. Mason sealed the outcome with more foul shots.
