Banvit BK improved to 2-1 in Last 16 Group K and increased its chances to make it to the Eurocup Quarterfinals by edging Buducnost Voli 68-61 in Bandirma, Turkey on Tuesday. Banvit improved to 2-1 in Group K and will qualify to the Quarterfinals if it beats Buducnost in Podgorica, Montenegro next week and Spartak downs Krka. Buducnost dropped to 1-2 and may run out of chances to qualify with a loss next week. Lance Williams paced the winners with 21 points on 9-of-10 two-pointers in less than 23 minutes. Chuck Davis added 12, Serkan Erdogan had 10 while Baris Ermis got 9, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals for Banvit. Bojan Dubljevic and Cedomir Vitkovac each had 14 points for Buducnost while Jermaine Anderson added 10. A 12-0 run that Erkan Veyseloglu capped with free throws gave Banvit a 51-34 margin late in the third quarter. Buducnost managed to get within 62-60 with a minute to go but Williams scored in the paint and added free throws to lead Banvit to a pivotal win.
Williams got Banvit going with a jumper and a layup by Kenan Bajramovic gave Banvit a 4-0 lead. Anderson and Bojan Krstovic stepped up with consecutive baskets and a put-back layup by Vitkovac gave Buducnost its first lead, 4-6. Anderson capped a 0-9 Buducnost run with a three-pointer, as Williams and Dubljevic traded layups for a 6-11 score. Williams kept pacing Banvit with a layup-plus-foul and Davis scored down low but Aleksa Popovic and Dubljevic kept the guests ahead, 11-16. Banvit found a go-to guy in Erdogan, who had 5 points in a 7-0 run that gave his team a 18-16 edge after 10 minutes. Nikola Ivanovic sank a jumper and Vitkovac matched Izzet Turkylmaz's shot with a put-back basket for a 20-20 tie. A layup by Cemal Nalga and an easy basket by Cliff Hammonds gave Banvit some fresh air at 24-20. Hasan Rizvic and Hammonds exchanged jumpers but Davis and Erdogan made Banvit extend its margin to 31-24. A three-pointer by Anderson fixed the halftime score at 31-27.
Dubljevic struck from downtown immediately after the break but back-to-back baskets by Davis and Williams gave Banvit a 35-30 edge. Erdogan shined with a layup and Williams added a jumper but Vitkovac and Dubljevic kept Buducnost within 39-34. The guests entered the foul bonus early in the third quarter and Banvit made the most out of it. Davis and Erkan Veyseloglu each had 4 free throws in a 12-0 run that broke the game open, 51-34. Buducnost had been scoreless for 4 minutes until Anderson made free throws but a jumper by Hammonds made Banvit regain a 17-point margin, 53-36, after 30 minutes. Vitkovac and Krstovic took over early in the fourth quarter, combining for all points in an 0-8 run that brought Buducnost within single digits, 53-44. Williams scored again but Ivanovic and Vitkovac got the guests even closer, 55-48, with 6 minutes left. Williams hit a jumper that Vladimir Mihailovic erased with foul shots. Ermis hit a triple and Williams sank a jumper to restore a 62-52 Banvit lead with 3 minutes left. Buducnost was not done, however, as Ivanovic and Dubljevic fueled an 0-8 run to get their team within 62-60 with a minute to go. Williams scored again and added free throws to seal the outcome, 66-61, rounding his near-perfect game in style.
