Booker stars in Bayern’s road win at Ulm

FC Bayern Munich started the Top 16 in style with a 57-68 road win over ratiopharm Ulm on Wednesday. Devin Booker posted 19 points, 15 rebounds and 3 steals and Maxi Kleber added 15 points and 9 rebounds to lead the winners. Reggie Redding added 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for Bayern, which overcame a poor three-point shooting night (3 of 26; 11.5%) by outrebounding the hosts 30-42. Augustine Rubit paced Ulm with 12 points and 7 rebounds, Taylor Braun added 11 and 7 and Braydon Hobbs scored 10 and dished 5 assists in defeat. The 57 points by Ulm was the second-fewest the club had ever scored in a EuroCup game.

Chris Babb put Ulm up 10-7, but Redding scored half the points in a 0-8 Bayern run that gave the visitors the lead for good. Kleber pushed the advantage to 7 before Karsten Tadda free throws closed the gap to 16-21 after 10 minutes. Taylor Braun helped Ulm rally to within 24-25, but Booker scored 7 points in a 0-9 Bayern response to take a double-digit lead. 3 Da’Sean Butler free throws carried Ulm to within 32-39 at halftime. The team traded shots for much of the third quarter before free throws by Vladimir Lucic and a triple by Bryce Taylor gave the visitors a 40-54 cushion through three quarters. Raymar Morgan scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter to give Ulm hope. Back-to-back threes by Rubit and Babb made it 53-59 with five minutes to go. Kleber countered with a basket-plus-foul and later hit free throws to restore a double-digit lead, 55-66, with two and a half minutes remaining and Ulm was limited to just one basket the rest of the way.

Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"I can make similar statements that Coach Djordjevic made 10 days ago in Munich. Munich played harder, they played smarter. They learned from the game in Munich and made the right adjustments. The way we started today wasn’t acceptable and the way their bigs played our bigs was a mirror to the game 10 days ago. We need to approach every game with the right attitude and the right physicality; I struggled to see that today. "
DJORDJEVIC, SASA
FC Bayern Munich
"It was really important to start the EuroCup Top16 with a win on the road. With Guenther and Ohlbrecht, Ulm was missing two of the most important players and we took advantage of that. We knew from the beginning where we wanted to go. Rebounding was a big key; Maxi Kleber closed the basket pretty well with some blocked shots and overall our defensive game was pretty decent. But 17 turnovers are still too much for a team like us."

Players

BRAUN, TAYLOR
ratiopharm Ulm
"We just didn’t make plays. We didn’t hit shots that we usually hit. It was not their strong defense; it was us, who didn’t make shots. Added to our bad offense we allowed Munich way too many offensive rebounds. "
KLEBER, MAXIMILIAN
FC Bayern Munich
"We defended well and had control over Ulm for the whole game. We played with the physicality we wanted to show already in the German League game against Ulm a couple of days before. To get this win was mentally big for us. "
