Beghelli Bologna registered a much-needed win in Group F by thrashing Panellinios BC 83-59 at home on Tuesday. Beghelli joined a three-way tie for the third place along with CEZ Basketball Nymburk and Telindus Oostende, all at 2-3. Meanwhile, Panellinios is sixth at 1-4 and needs to start winning right away to keep its elimination rounds hope alive. Horace Jenkins paced the winners with 20 points and 5 assists. Dante Calabria added 16 points, while James Thomas posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for Fortitudo. Lewis Sims and Anthony Grundy each had 14 points for Panellinios while Marton Bader grabbed 12 rebounds for the guests, who led 23-27 midway through the second quarter. Calabria led an 8-0 run that put Beghelli ahead for good. The hosts kept a 42-36 lead at halftime and limited Panellinios to just 10 points in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Jenkins and Kristaps Janicenoks boosted Beghelli's lead to 61-46 and soon managed to seal the outcome long before the final buzzer.

Thomas broke the ice as the game started off on the physical side. Bologna quickly took a 7-2 lead and defended. Evangelos Karamboulas and Bader were perfect from the line to pull Panellinios within 1 and it remained tight throughout the period until Kristaps Janicenoks's three-point play made it 19-18 after 10 minutes. It was neck-and-neck in the second period as Dalibor Bagaric tied it at 27-27 with under five minutes left to halftime. Calabria then brought his energy into play, drawing a foul and picking up a steal for 4 quick points. After Dozet's block and triple got Panellinios within 1, Calabria and Jenkins came through to give the hosts a 42-36 halftime advantage. Grundy opened the second half intending to attack the rim, but Jenkins and Janicenoks instead carried Bologna to a double digit lead. Jenkins's three from the top of the key sent Bologna 16 up. N’Diaye threw down a fierce dunk as Bologna got sloppy, but Stefano Mancinelli kept the hosts in charge. Kesicki and Grundy tried to ignite a comeback, but Oscar Torres netted a dagger from the top of the key before finding Calabria open for another triple which sent the hosts up 21, allowing the Bologna to cruise to its second win, which keeps its chances of going through to the elimination rounds alive.

Head Coaches

MAZZON, ANDREA
Fortitudo Bologna
"I think some players from the bench did an excellent job, for example Calabria and Janicenoks did really well on defense. Cittadini and Kesicki made their presence felt in the paint as well, playing well together, they did well too on the boards. Sometimes, it's hard to focus when you keep reading in the media that you're about to be cut and some players tonight have managed to put that aside and concentrate on the game. This victory is important for the moral and to work better together."
KALAFATAKIS, GEORGIOS
Panellinios Athens
"It was a very difficult game tonight. I think the results Fortitudo obtained so far does not give a good idea of its true value. I think we played very well as a team in the first half. We had a chance to go up by 5 or 6 but then we made a couple of careless turnovers and some bad shooting options left us trailing at the half. I'd like to congratulate Fortitudo, and wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season, be that in the league or in the ULEB Cup."

Players

CITTADINI, ALESSANDRO
Fortitudo Bologna
"The key was our defense. The defense is the important part, if we manage to keep the opponent under the 70-point mark, it becomes a lot easier to win. The first thing has to be playing at 100% on defense, then the offense comes easily. We knew the Greeks were tough and I think we did a great job physically."
BADER, MARTON
Panellinios Athens
"Now we have played all the teams in the first round. Now it's going to be very tough to qualify for the second round but if we have a chance we will fight."
