Paul Davis - Cajasol (photo: Alba Berlin)Cajasol Sevilla made it to the Eurocup Quarterfinals by downing Alba Berlin 81-95 in Group L in Germany on Tuesday. Cajasol improved to 4-0 and already improved its best-ever results in European club competitions. Meanwhile, Alba dropped to 1-3 and faces a do-or-die showdown against Benetton Bwin at the O2 World next week. Paul Davis led the winners with 21 points. Louis Bullock added 18, Tariq Kirksay had 14 while Bojan Popovic got 12 for Cajasol. Derrick Allen led Alba with 21 points. Julius Jenkins had 17, Immanuel McElroy added 16 while Lucca Staiger got 14 for the hosts. Cajasol opened the game with a 4-16 run and, led by Kirksay and an outstanding Bullock, boosted its lead to 18-32 after 10 minutes. Cajasol hit 24-of-33 shots and forced Alba to commit 11 first-half turnovers, enough for the guests to get a 37-62 margin at the break. McElroy led a wild fourth-quarter comeback that brought Alba within 77-87 with 4 minutes left but Davis and Bullock allowed Cajasol to put the victory on ice. Cajasol's 62 first-half points on the road almost ties a Eurocup record. Dynamo Moscow had 63 first-half points in a road win against Crvena Zvezda in the 2007-08 season.

Kirksay got Cajasol going with a layup, igniting a 0-9 opening run that Mindaugas Katelynas capped with a triple. Jenkins tried to change things with a jumper and Patrick Femerling added a layup but Bullock and Davis soon gave Cajasol a double-digit lead, 4-14. Kirksay scored again but Allen answered with a three-point play. Popovic and Jenkins traded baskets but a triple by Kirksay boosted the guests' lead to 9-21. Staiger answered from downtown but Popovic and Kirksay fueled a 0-6 run that made it a 15-point game, 12-27. Tadija Dragicevic and Jenkins led a 6-0 Alba run but Bullock followed free throws with a buzzer-beating triple that restored a 18-32 Cajasol margin after 10 minutes. Earl Calloway and Jenkins traded baskets early in the second quarter but Cajasol kept rolling. Bullock shined with a fast break layup and another triple by Kirksay forced Alba to call timeout at 20-39. Davis followed free throws with a layup and a jumper by Katelynas capped a 0-11 run that broke the game open, 20-45. Allen took over with a layup-plus-foul and Staiger struck from downtown but Davis and Kirksay kept Cajasol way ahead, 26-49. Allen and McElroy kept pacing Alba and Staiger sank his third triple for a 35-55 deficit. Txemi Urtasun and Bullock allowed Cajasol to get a 37-62 margin at halftime.

Katelynas split free throws and Juanjo Triguero scored down low for a 37-65 score immediately after the break. Yassin Idbihi and McElroy tried to ignite the hosts' comeback and a jumper by Allen got Alba within 43-67. Jenkins sank a three-pointer and Allen added a layup but Alba only managed to trade baskets now. Kaloyan Ivanov provided a highlight with a reverse layup and soon added free throws for a 49-72 score. Three-pointers by Sven Schultze and Staiger made Alba get a bit closer, 57-76, but Davis silenced the crowd with a dunk. Davis and Popovic helped Cajasol to keep a safe margin, 64-85, at the end of the third quarter. Alba improved its defense and free throws by Schultze and McElroy fueled a 9-0 run highlighted by Jenkins' dunk, forcing Cajasol to call timeout at 73-85. Satoransky took over with a dunk but McElroy singlehandedly brought Alba closer, 77-87, with 4 minutes left. A three-point play by Davis sealed the outcome, 77-90, as even when Alba kepy trying, Cajasol had cruised to a historical, pivotal road win.

Head Coaches

Alba Berlin
"We played a terrible first half, which is even more frustrating, because in the third quarter and especially in the fourth quarter, we played good defensively and offensively. Maybe you will ask me, 'What happened in the first half?', but I have now answer for that. I think we had a very good preparation for the game, maybe the best, since I am here. The players understood everything, but the game started like we had been preparing nothing, So on one side I am very disappointed, but on the other side I want to take the good things from this loss, which was how we played the second half. We have to start the next game like we finished this one."
PLAZA, JOAN
Cajasol Seville
"For us, it was not that easy a game as the people probably will read about tomorrow in the newspapers. You saw from the beginning my team eating the court. We all fought for every ball. If we keep on playing this way, I am confident that we will stay successful. We saw some recent games of Alba and knew that they could change the rhythm of the game when they play more physically. But we have to learn from this. We finished the first half with 5 turnovers and finished the game with 15. Best wishes for Alba. I know, that it is very difficult for them now, but I have seen stranger things in my career."

Players

ALLEN, DERRICK
Alba Berlin
"We lost the game in the first half. We allowed them to score way too many fastbreak points. But we also must give Sevilla credit for their great defense in the first half. In the second half, we played much better, but it remains a disappointing loss for us."
BULLOCK, LOUIS
Cajasol Seville
"We are very happy about this big win, which is very important for us. Now we want to focus on making first place in the group. We came out really focused tonight. For myself and Tariq Kirksay, as the veterans, it was our job to get the team off to a good start and take the pressure off of our teammates. And that was it. We played some pretty good defense, which gave us a lot of fastbreaks."
