Renaldas Seibutis - Lietuvos Rytas (photo bc.lrytas.lt)Lietuvos Rytas got much closer to clinch a Quarterfinals spot in difficult Group L by downing Alba Berlin 62-79 in front of almost 8,000 fans in the German capital on Tuesday. L. Rytas improved to 3-1 and ties for first place in this group. Alba dropped to 0-4 and is mathematically out of chances to make it to the next round. Ronnie Seibutis led the winners with 24 points on 4-of-5 triples. Tyrese Rice and Mindaugas Katelynas each added 10 for L. Rytas. DaShaun Wood and Bryce Taylor led Alba with 13 points apiece. Kyle Weaver added 11 while Marko Simonovic got 10 for the hosts. A 2-13 run that Seibutis capped with a three-pointer gave L. Rytas a 18-30 lead early in the second quarter. L. Rytas managed to keep a 31-43 edge at halftime and even when Taylor, Weaver and Heiko Schaffartzik managed to bring Alba within 54-62, Seibutis and Predrag Samardziski shined in crunch time to lead the guests to a very important road win.

Jonas Valanciunas got L. Rytas going with a three-point play and Lawrence Roberts added a put-back basket but Taylor and Weaver helped Alba to tie it at 5-5. Valanciunas scored again and a jumper by Arturas Jomantas gave L. Rytas a 5-9 edge. Simonovic nailed back-to-back triples but Seibutis answered twice from downtown and soon added a jumper to keep the guests ahead, 13-17. Schaffartzik joined the three-point shootout but a layup by Steponas Babrauskas and a dunk by Roberts forced Alba to call timeout at 16-21. Roberts slammed it again that Wood erased with a layup off a steal to bring the hosts within 18-23 after 10 minutes. Katelynas scored early in the second quarter, as Alba went scoreless for more than 3 minutes. A red hot Seibutis followed a layup with a three-pointer that made it a double-digit game, 18-30. Derrick Allen and Taylor rescued Alba with back-to-back layups and even when Rice found his first points, a jumper by Schaffartzik brought the hosts as close as 26-33. Seibutis buried his fourth triple, igniting an 0-8 run that Aleksandar Rasic capped with his own shot from downtown for a 15-point L. Rytas margin, 26-41. Wood buried a triple and added a layup to bring Alba within 31-43 at halftime.

Roberts hit a three-pointer right after the break but Alba had improved its defense. Meanwhile, Wood and Weaver fueled a 7-0 run that got the crowd involved at 38-46. Jomantas split free throws and Seibutis added a jumper but Simonovic and Taylor brought Alba even closer, 42-49. Seibutis - who else? - scored again and a put-back basket by Valanciunas gave L. Rytas some fresh air at 44-53. Weaver and Rasic traded three-pointers and Valanciunas made the guests restore a double-digit edge, 47-57. Weaver nailed a jumper but a free throw by Samardziski and a basket by Rice fixed the score at 49-60 after 30 minutes. Rice scored again early in the fourth quarter but a three-pointer by Taylor and free throws by Schaffartzik brought Alba within 54-62 with 6 minutes to go. Katelynas stepped up with a jumper and a layup by Samardziski forced the hosts to call timeout at 54-66. Back-to-back baskets by Seibutis and another layup by Samardziski sealed the outcome, 56-72, allowing L. Rytas to celebrate a big road win that put the guests in an excellent position to keep fighting for Eurocup glory.

HERBERT, GORDON
Alba Berlin
"I am disappointed. I expecteded a much better performance tonight. But I also give credit to Rytas. The played really well, they outplayed us. I think last week in Lithuania we played a much better game. We gave up some easy baskets right at the beginning. That gave them confidence and they started hitting their threes."
DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
"Obviously this is a good result for us. We played a good game on defense. A key was that we took good control of Alba’s transition game because there they are one of the best teams in the competition. We were good at shooting threes and rebounding and basically controlled the game."
