Della Valle shines a Reggio Emilia blasts Limoges

Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia put together a tough defensive showing in starting its Top 16 campaign with a convincing 87-54 victory at home over Limoges CSP. Amedeo Della Valle led the way for Reggio Emilia with 22 points, a career-high 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals for a career-high performance index ranking of 38. Julian Wright had a great all-around game with 13 points on some big dunks to go with 4 assists and 2 blocks, while both James White and Landing Sane chipped in 13 points for the winners. It was the home side’s defense that made the difference, holding Limoges to just 33 percent shooting from the field. Axel Bouteille was Limoges’s top scorer with 9 points and Brian Conklin added 7 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

Della Valle opened the scoring for the hosts and two scores from Jalen Reynolds made it 6-2. Josh Carter’s three-pointer gave Limoges its first lead 8-9 and after handing the lead back, the guests jumped up 12-17 after a three-point play from Dru Joyce and a three from Danny Gibson. Julian Wright’s layup just before the buzzer had Reggio Emilia within 16-18 after 10 minutes. Both teams went to their benches in the second quarter and Bouteille and Tautvydas Lydeka both scored twice as Limoges led 23-26. Della Valle, the competition’s second leading scorer, came back on and followed White’s three-pointer with a three of his own for a 33-28 Reggio Emilia advantage. The margin was 40-31 at the break after a Leonardo Candi three-pointer and White’s put-back of his miss just before the buzzer.

Limoges tallied the first 5 points of the second half to trim the gap to 4 points, but Reggio Emilia charged back with a 9-0 spurt with a Della Valle three and three-point play from Chris Wright to go up 49-36. Limoges’ offensive struggles continued and big man Sane hit from long range and Julian Wright ended the quarter with a big dunk and block that put Reggio Emilia up 58-43. Carter opened the fourth quarter for the visitors, but Julian Wright continued his superb game with two baskets, a steal and a block to make it 64-45. Bouteille tallied 5 points for Limoges in the middle of the quarter, but Reggio Emilia got a pair of triples from Sane and 5 more points from Della Valle in finishing the game on a 15-0 run.

“We have big respect for Limoges, in the first part we suffered a lot from their physical approach of the game, but in the second half we attacked a lot better in situation where we had advantages and we played 20 minutes with big concentration and focus with great respect for our opponent. We know that our EuroCup will pass through point difference, so we are happy about this game.”

“Most important for me is life. We’ve lost our president, he was my boss, he was 47 years old, he had a family, three daughters so in this moment I can’t say anything else. He was a person I respected, in this moment my thoughts are for him and basketball is in second place.”
