Khimki snaps Fenerbahce's 12-game winning streak

Khimki Moscow Region took its first victory over Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in nearly six years with an 84-78 overtime thriller at home in the Russian capital on Tuesday, snapping the visitors' club-record 12-game winning streak. Fenerbahce's had been the EuroLeague's longest in-season winning streak since CSKA won 15 in a row during the 2014-15 season. Stefan Markovic paced Khimki with 13 points and 7 rebounds, while Anthony Gill picked up 12 points and 7 rebounds in his return from injury and Dee Bost chipped in 12 points and 5 assists. Khimki has now won three of its last four games to improve to 7-10. Melih Mahmutoglu hit 4 three-pointers in scoring a team-high 18 points for Fenerbahce, which suffered its first loss since October 25 against Anadolu Efes Istanbul to fall to 15-2. Jan Vesely had 17 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a career high 5 steals before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Charles Jenkins opened the scoring for Khimki before Nikola Kalinic's three-pointer gave Fenerbahce its first lead at 5-7. After Egor Vialtsev evened the game at 9-9, Mahmutoglu sparked a 2-14 run over nearly 5 minutes with 7 points and Ali Muhammed knocked down a three-pointer for an 11-23 Fenerbahce lead, which was 13-23 after 10 minutes. Mahmutoglu's second three-ball increased the gap to 13-26 but Fenerbahce went scoreless for more than 4 minutes after that as Khimki went on an 11-0 run before Markovic's three-pointer cut the gap to 27-28. Kostas Sloukas answered with a three-point play but Khimki continued its strong play with Garlon Green picking up 7 points in a 9-2 spurt to pull back ahead 36-35. Sloukas hit 4 foul shots at the other end and Fenerbahce was up 38-41 at the break. After Khimki trimmed the difference to 40-41 to start the second half, Vesely took over with 8 points to push the gap to 45-51. But Khimki was not impressed, as Jenkins hit a three-point to end an 11-0 surge that flipped the scoreboard to 56-51. Muhammed snapped the Fenerbahce's nearly five-minute scoreless drought with a three-ball, but Khimki still led 57-54 after 30 minutes. Mahmutoglu sparked Fenerbahce back into the game with two tough three-pointers -- both with the shot clock winding down -- and then hit a break-away layup for a 63-66 Fenerbahce lead. Markovic punched back from downtown and Gill's three-point play put Khimki up 69-66 with 72 seconds left. Vesely and Gill both split free throws and Nicolo Melli's score trimmed it to 70-69 with 25 seconds remaining. The game came down to free throws and Markovic missed both of his with 17 seconds left before Melli split a pair with 1.4 seconds to play to send the game to overtime tied 72-72. It was the first extra session of the season for either team. With Vesely fouled out, Fenerbahce did not have its leading scorer and could not get any offense going while Gill picked up 2 baskets and Jordan Mickey another to make it 80-74. Melli did hit free throws but Fenerbahce came up empty on its next possession and Bost secured the win with 2 free throws and 21 seconds left for an 82-76 lead.

Khimki finally beat Fenerbahce again

Khimki improved its all-time EuroLeague mark against Fenerbahce to 3-7, snapping a five-game losing streak dating back to its last win on March 22, 2013 -- a 99-76 triumph in the Top 16.

Game-changing sequence

Khimki did a good job coming back from Stefan Markovic's missed free throws late in regulation and opened the overtime with an 8-2 run to decide the game. Anthony Gill scored half of those points.

History made

In the third quarter, Fenerbahce's Jan Vesely became the 30th player in EuroLeague history to score 2,000 career points and finished with 2,008 in 190 games for Partizan NIS Belgrade and Fenerbahce.

Telling numbers

Khimki held Fenerbahce to just 26.9% from three-point range -- well below its league-best 45.0% coming into the game. The hosts had just 12 turnovers, just 3 in the second half and overtime.

"We confused them with our switching defense in the first half. In the beginning, they had some success throwing to the high post and over us. We didn't have our help-side [defense]. But in the second half, we made some changes and adjustments and put them out of their rhythm. The plan worked. We should have won it earlier, but I didn't close the game like I should have. In the end, fortunately we won the game, and it was a good collective win."

"We played with toughness. We had been playing well the last couple of games. We knew we had to come out and play aggreessive, play tough, and play smart on offense. That's what we did and we came out with the win. We got stops on defense, we didn't turn the ball over, and when that happens, you get good looks. It starts from defense. It's two wins in a row. It's something that we've been capable of doing all season. We're fianlly starting to win those close games. We've got to keep it rolling."
