Sikma shines as ALBA romps over Galatasaray

ALBA Berlin registered its first win of the Top 16 by outclassing visiting Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul 95-62 on Wednesday night in the German capital. ALBA is now 1-1 in Group E, while Galatasaray dropped to 0-2 in the Top 16. The hosts used a 16-3 run to open the game and a 16-2 run at the start of the second half to build a 24-point lead and cruise to a comfortable win. Luke Sikma had 25 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and Marius Grigonis netted 18 in victory. Joshiko Saibou had 13 and Niels Giffey 11 points for ALBA. Scotty Hopson scored 11 in defeat.

ALBA stormed out of the gate, with Grigonis scoring 7 points, including a triple, and Peyton Siva dishing 4 assists and sinking a three-pointer that made it 16-3. Ege Arar scored twice inside for the visitors and Jordan Taylor and Henry Walker opening their accounts, but Akeem Vargas with a jumper and Kresimir Nikic with an easy two-pointer helped ALBA to a 24-13 lead after 10 minutes. Galatasaray opened the second quarter with an alley-oop from Emir Preldzic to Hopson and after a triple from Saibou, baskets from Preldzic and Richard Hendrix closed the gap to 32-25. But Saibou and Sikma restored a double-digit lead, and Giffey’s triple made it 39-26. But Alex Renfroe answered with a three of his own, and teams went into the halftime with ALBA up 44-34.

Similar to the first, ALBA had a strong start to the second half, too. Grigonis made a jumper, and Vargas a second- chance triple as the hosts scored 9 unanswered points and held Galatasaray without a basket for almost four minutes to start the third quarter, opening up a 53-34 margin. A triple from Grigonis made it 60-36 before Hopson’s three-pointers snapped a 16-2 run. Five more points from Hopson late in the third helped make it 67-47 after 30 minutes, but ALBA’s dominance continued in the fourth, as it kept Galatasaray scoreless for another four minutes. Giffey’s triple helped made it 74-47, before another three from Giffey and back-to-back three-point shots from Saibou made it 83-50 midway through the fourth, as ALBA was well on its way to victory.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
ALBA Berlin
“We began very well and ran a lot. We ran a lot because also our big men are able to run the floor. It was an advantage for us and maybe not everybody on the Galatasaray team was used to that. In the second quarter it was not the same, but in the second half we played very well again. We won mainly because of the speed and sometimes we also played very good offense.”
SEN, RECEP
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
“Congratulations to ALBA. They played very well. We know they play well and fast. We tried to stop that, but we couldn’t. Actually we planned to stop the ball and pressure the ball, but we couldn’t profit from that. Maybe it was my fault as a coach. I am sorry for that.”

Players

SIKMA, LUKE
ALBA Berlin
"We stuck to the game plan and what we wanted to do. We have a lot of confidence in our team, and we knew we played against a talented team. In the second half we made some shots, played some great defense and got a good win."
SAIBOU, JOSHIKO
ALBA Berlin
"It is a great win for us, especially after a tough loss last week against Gran Canaria. We were able to play out our game plan like we planned to, and push the ball and play fast, because the idea was we had a faster team than them. We did this from beginning on, Peyton Siva found Dennis Clifford a couple times early. We made out shots, played fast, got into the rhythm and just kept rolling."
HENDRIX, RICHARD
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"We are in a hole, and we have to get out of it. Hopefully we can get some bodies healthy, regroup, and make a push in the last four games. It will be tough, but we did it last round. Hopefully we can do it again."
WALKER, HENRY
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"We did not do enough to compete tonight and stay in the game. First half was close, but then they just came out and executed what they wanted to do. We did not have any answers and that was pretty much the ball game."
RENFROE, ALEX
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"I feel disappointed. They deserved to win. ALBA came out and played well, they executed. And us, we did not do anything. The performance spoke for itself. We have to fix things and we have to do it now. They beat us to every ball, everything that happened on the court they wanted it more than we did. Me personally, I did not do anything, and I think all of my teammates agree that we did not show up tonight."
