Valencia thrashes Real on the road

Valencia Basket remained undefeated in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague by downing Real Madrid 77-93 in the Spanish capital on Thursday. Valencia improved to 2-0 in the standings while Real dropped to 0-2. Bojan Dubljevic led the winners with 24 points, Mike Tobey added 14 and Nikola Kalinic scored 10 for Valencia. Walter Tavares paced Real with 15 point, Facu Campazzo netted 14 and Rudy Fernandez and Trey Thompkins each had 12 for the hosts, which led 19-17 after 10 minutes. Valencia took a 39-44 lead at halftime, extended it to 51-68 late in the third quarter and then again to 55-80 soon after that, more than enough to seal the outcome.

Alberto Abalde got Real going with a three-pointer, but Derrick Williams and Kalinic soon put Valencia ahead, 3-4. Tavares dunked and Gabriel Deck added a fastbreak layup for a 7-4 Real lead. Dubljevic struck twice from downtown and Guillem Vives scored in penetration to tie it at 12-12. Abalde stepped up with a put-back layup and Campazzo scored in penetration for a 16-12 Real lead. Campazzo hit his second three-pointer, but Kalinic and Louis Labeyrie kept Valencia within 19-17 after 10 minutes. Martin Hermannsson took over with a driving layup early in the second quarter. Fernandez and Tavares combined for all the points in a 6-0 run, but Labeyrie hit a triple to make it 25-22. Tavares dunked again and Anthony Randolph found his first points. Sam Van Rossom took over with a wild three-point play and Tobey followed a layup with an alley-oop dunk in a 3-15 run in which Labeyrie and Dubljevic each struck from beyond the arc to put Valencia in charge, 32-37, after a 3-15 run. Kalinic surprised Real's defense with a backdoor layup and Dubljevic nailed another triple for a 34-42 Valencia edge. Sergio Llull scored from way downtown and Campazzo kept Real within 39-44 at halftime.

Dubljevic fired in his fifth and sixth triple immediately after the break to make it a double-digit game, 41-52. Prepelic bettered Garuba's layup with a three-point play, but Fabien Causeur and Campazzo brought the hosts within 47-55. Kalinic scored in the low post and Vives added a driving layup, which prompted a Real timeout at 47-59. Dubljevic kept pacing the guests and Williams added a coast-to-coast bucket and a three-pointer that broke the game open, 51-68. Llull brought his team within 53-68 after 30 minutes. Hermannsson stepped up with a three-point play early in the fourth quarter. Tobey scored down low and Fernando San Emeterio added a jumper and a three-pointer for a 55-78 Valencia lead with 7 minutes left. Real never gave up but Valencia had cruised to an outstanding road win.

Pivotal performer

Dubljevic was the star of the game, taking advantage of pick-and-pop situations to get open shots from beyond the arc. He finished the game with 24 points on 6-of-9 three-point shooting and 4-of-4 on free throws. He posted a performance index rating of 23 in less than 19 minutes on the court.

Game-changing moment

Valencia led 39-44 at halftime and a Real reaction was expected after the break. Dubljevic had other ideas, however, as he immediately buried a couple of three-pointers. Prepelic added 5 quick points and the whole Real defense collapsed. Valencia ended up scoring 24 points in the third quarter for a 51-68 lead that allowed it to control the game until the end.

Stellar stat

Valencia took much better care of the ball, finishing the game with 21 assists and just 11 turnovers. On the other hand, Real had 17 assists and 15 turnovers. Valencia also shot the ball slightly better from downtown, making 11 of 23 three-point shots (47.8%) and limiting Real to 10-of-29 shooting (34.5%).

Did you know?

It is Real's worst home loss in more than eight years. Montepaschi Siena defeated Real 69-88 in the Spanish capital on January 25, 2012. Its largest home loss in the EuroLeague - and all European competitions - came against Kinder Bologna, 58-86, on March 20, 2002.

Next game

Both teams return to EuroLeague action early next week. Valencia hosts FC Barcelona on Tuesday, October 13. A day later, Real Madrid welcomes Khimki Moscow Region.

Real Madrid
"Congratulations to Valencia. I think they played a very complete game with a good three-point percentage, opening the floor a lot with Dubljevic. I think we had a very good start of the game with good vibrations on defense and game rhythm, but after that we started to fall apart. The people who came off the bench produced poorly and so did the people who returned to the floor. We were always behind them. So we wanted to do it, but couldn't get it. When he had good defense, we played bad on offense; when we played a couple of good offenses, we played a couple of bad defenses... It is something that already happened to us in Vitoria last week. Valencia was really accurate from beyond the three-point line and that penalized us. Congratulations to Valencia. We have to think that we must improve a lot on the individual and team aspects. We are 0-2 and the EuroLeague started last week. And we are late. If you don't play well, you are playing against the best teams in Europe, as Valencia and Baskonia have shown. We don't have wins after two games and I don't think we did well in either of them."
Valencia Basket

"We are making steps forwards, but still need to improve a lot. What's most important now, today, is that a lot of players took confidence [from this win]. For us, it is very important because we are a new team and need to improve a bit every day, in every game. I think that we did our best work so far this season. We need to go step by step, not just game by game, but practice by practice in order to improve. We have to keep searching for our best version."

"We had a balanced start of the game, being brave, understanding that we played against a team able to play great defense. We found brave players from the beginning of the game and when we started to find Dubi [Dubljevic] in open three-point situations, we found more space for other players to run to the basket and score. On defense, we were very happy with what was going on. Even though they are a good team, we did a good job against their systems and entry passes. We have positive vibes. We thought there could be a moment of inflection in which Real could make the most out of it, but it was us who changed the game, scoring and hitting shots. In modern basketball, hitting three-point shots is very important and in the key moments, in which they tried to get closer, showing character, we stopped but found players who were able to score. I believe that the key was the bravery that my players showed tonight."

Real Madrid
"We didn't play that bad in the first half; we had a good attitude, but then in the second half we didn't find answers against Valencia's game. The EuroLeague is a very difficult competition and we have to be strong at home. It goes further than the details, it is also a matter of wanting it, having attitude and intensity. It doesn't matter what you do if you play with intensity, because that is good for the team. It is a matter of focus, but the good thing is that we know what is going on. We have to work hard, practice, get back to our practice court and work hard to change things. We lacked energy for the better part of the game, missed a lot of shots, allowed them to play without playing with intensity on defense. These are things we can handle. We know the pressure it takes to play here, we accept that pressure and know what we have to do."
Valencia Basket
"I thought it was a good game. We fought hard, especially in the first half we really fought. The important thing for us at halftime was to keep the lead and just come out with the same energy, same fight. We did a great job in the second half. I think in the second half we did a good job of fighting and we got a big lead and we kept it. We didn't let down, we kept the pressure on them. This a really good win for us."
Valencia Basket
"It was a really important and a really hard game. The good thing is that we beat one of the best teams in Europe on their court, which is really hard. I think we are working hard, improving day by day, and I think we have to focus on the next game."
Valencia Basket
"This win means a lot for our confidence. It is just the beginning of the season, but this is a good start after the first game against ASVEL, where we didn't play so good. I think that tonight we showed that we can play really good basketball this season and it is an amazing victory to beat Real Madrid in Madrid. Everybody knows that Madrid is a big team. We are happy, but the rollercoaster keeps on. We have a Spanish League and a EuroLeague double week immediately after that. A lot of games. We are not relaxing, but this is an amazing victory for us."
