De Colo shines, CSKA wins in Milan

CSKA Moscow recorded its first Turkish Airlines EuroLeague win in 2018 by downing AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan 81-107 on the road on Thursday. CSKA remained atop the standings with a 13-4 record, while Milan dropped to 4-13. Nando De Colo led the winners with 24 points, Will Clyburn and Sergio Rodriguez each had 15, Cory Higgins added 12 and Nikita Kurbanov 11 for CSKA. Kaleb Tarczewski paced Milan with 17 points, Dairis Bertans scored 15 and Amath M'Baye had 13 for the hosts. De Colo shined early, getting help from Kyle Hines and Semen Antonov to give CSKA 15-23 lead at the end of the first quarter. M'Baye stepped up for Milan, but he didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, Higgins, Rodriguez and an outstanding De Colo made it a 14-point game at halftime. A three-pointer by Mindaugas Kuzminskas brought Milan within 54-60, but Clyburn dunked twice and added a three-point play and a put-back basket for a 61-77 CSKA lead after 30 minutes. CSKA soon boosted its margin to 63-89 and never looked back.

De Colo got CSKA going with free throws, Clyburn scored in the low post and a fast break layup by Antonov gave the guests a 2-8 lead. Bertans struck twice from downtown and Tarczewski added an alley-oop slam to tie it at 10-10. Vladimir Micov hit a three-pointer, but consecutive layups by Hines, Rodriguez and Antonov put CSKA back in charge, 13-16. De Colo buried a triple and Higgins added a dunk for a 15-23 CSKA lead after 10 minutes. Curtis Jerrells hit a step-back jumper early in the second quarter and M'Baye added a turnaround jumper, a high-flying dunk and a three-pointer, which prompted CSKA to call timeout at 24-27. Victor Khryapa and Kurbanov stepped up for CSKA, Higgins scored in penetration and a dunk by Othello Hunter caused Milan to stop the game at 26-35. Arturas Gudaitis followed free throws with a slam and M'Baye hit a jumper, but Rodriguez buried a triple and an unstoppable De Colo made it a double-digit game, 34-45. Free throws by Clyburn and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by De Colo boosted CSKA's lead to 36-50 at halftime.

Bertans and Andrea Cinciarini scored in penetration soon after the break and an outstanding Tarczewski dunked to get Milan as close as 46-52. De Colo and Rodriguez tried to change things for CSKA but three-pointers by Bertans and Kuzminskas kept Milan within 6. De Colo kept pushing CSKA, Kurbanov took over with a reverse layup and Clyburn dunked twice, following that with a three-point play that gave CSKA fresh air at 60-73. A jumper by Rodriguez and a put-back layup by Clyburn broke the game open at 61-77 after 30 minutes. Rodriguez downed a triple early in the fourth quarter and a 0-9 run that Kurbanov capped with a layup-plus-foul sealed the outcome, 63-89. Milan kept trying, but CSKA cruised to a well-deserved road win.

"We knew the game was going to be prohibitive. I expected CSKA to play a statement game and they did. We tried to come back and were close in the third, then we made a couple of silly mistakes. Then we waited for the game to end and this is wrong. I wanted to use this game to improve."

"First of all, I would like to wish Happy New Year to everybody - to you and to your families. That is my wish to you and loved ones: be healthy. Regarding the game, I think we were the better team tonight and that was proved on the court by numbers, by performance. We wanted to bounce back after a couple of bad performances that were not at our level. I think we were consistent in what we wanted on the court. The numbers could be a little bit better for us, but still, we had a good opponent in front of us and they tried to come back in the third quarter. They pressured us and that led to 3 turnovers and bad shots. We gave them the opportunity to come back, but after all, we found exactly what we wanted on the court, the advantages and therefore shot very well from two-point range - fast breaks, post-ups and a lot of good synchronizations in the pick-and-roll game. Congratulations to my players, it was a well-deserved win and we have to build on that. I wish the best to Milan."

"It was a great team victory, much needed after coming back from two difficult losses - one in the VTB, one in the EuroLeague - last week. As coach said, it was important for us to bounce back together as a team and get this important road win. "
