SLUC Nancy downs EWE Baskets in Oldenburg

SLUC Nancy closed in on a Last 32 berth with a convincing 71-85 victory at EWE Baskets Oldenburg to improve to 5-3 in Group C. Nancy will advance as soon as next week if it wins or Proximus Spirou Charleroi loses. Darius Adams paced Nancy with 25 points while Randal Falker collected 15 points and 10 rebounds, Sergii Gladyr had 14 points and Vaughn Duggins chipped in 11 points for the winners. Oldenburg dropped to 2-6 despite 17 points from Casper Ware, while Julius Jenkins scored 16 points and Adam Chubb had 12.

Duggins gave the guests its first mini-lead at 3-7 with a three-pointer. Rickey Paulding committed 3 turnovers for the hosts and Falker scored back-to-back baskets for a 7-11 lead. After Nemanja Aleksandrov knotted the contest at 11-11, Duggins and Benjamin Sene knocked down back-to-back three-balls and Ryan Reid completed the 0-10 run for an 11-21 advantage. And the margin was 13-23 after one quarter. Jenkins scored his first points early in the second quarter with a three-pointer and his layup trimmed the deficit to 20-25. Oldenburg went scoreless for the next three minutes while Adams scored a layup and drained a triple before Bandja Sy made it 20-32. Falker scored two more baskets to increase the cushion to 24-38. Jenkins proved one of the few offensive options for Oldenburg with a three-pointer and four free throws to pull within 31-38. Paulding stepped up for the hosts to knock down a triple to make it 34-40. The Nancy cushion was 34-42 at the break.

Adams made two layups to push the lead out to double digits 36-47 while Oldenburg tried to make a dent in the cushion with Chubb’s layup making it 41-49. But Gladyr and Duggins combined to score all 12 points in a 4-12 run and a 45-61 lead. Ware converted a three-point play and knocked down a three-ball to cut the gap to 51-63. But Adams hit four straight free throws to push the margin to 53-69 before Ware’s three-pointer to leave Oldenburg down 56-69 after 30 minutes. Jenkins scored to open the fourth quarter to get within 58-69 and that’s the closest the hosts would get the rest of the game. Adams nailed a three-ball to make it 58-73 and Gladyr and Falker combined for six points in an 0-8 surge for a 62-81 advantage with four minutes to play. The hosts did not get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

"Nancy deserved the win. They were the team, that was able to define the way the game was played today. We could not find any rhythm on offense. It is disappointing to give away this opportunity at home, as we played a lot better in Nancy. My team really missed the energy of Chris Kramer. We have to reduce our mistakes on defense, but also have to play more as a team and get every player involved on offense. Our team was not able to control Darius Adams. Our team did not show enough heart to win this game and nobody found the intensity that we would have needed.”
WEISZ, ALAIN

"We were impressed by our first game against Oldenburg, they also impressed us against ALBA Berlin, so we knew it would be a challenge for us. Tonight we had a good start, then it was a lot easier for us to play the game, as you find confidence, when you play a game up by 10. We tried to stop Casper Ware, who is a great scorer and we did that in the first half. I have to congratulate Florent Pietrus, who stopped Nemanja Aleksandrov. We controlled the game. Darius Adams was important as a scorer, and we still found ways to produce, when Oldenburg played with more intensity and did not show any fear. To win on the road was very important, as this group remains close."
