Cajasol got closer to clinch first place in Last 16 Group L by downing Panellinios BC 84-71 in Seville, Spain on Tuesday. Cajasol improved to 5-0 in Group L and will clinch first place if it beats Benetton Bwin or loses by up to 11 in Treviso, Italy next week. Panellinios dropped to 0-5 but had already ran out of chances to reach the Quarterfinals. Txemi Urtasun paced the winners with 13 points. Kaloyan Ivanov and Juanjo Triguero each added 12 while Louis Bullock had 10 for Cajasol. Steven Smith led Panellinios with 16 points against his former team. Torin Francis added 14, Maurice Bailey had 13 while Joseph Krabbenhoft got 12 for the guests, that trailed 36-20 midway through the second quarter. Bailey, Krabbenhoft and a three-pointer by Papamakarios got Panellinios within 42-37 at halftime. Free throws by Smith completed the guests' comeback, 44-46, right after the break. Ivanov and Triguero fueled a 10-0 run that allowed Cajasol to get the lead for good, 66-55. Panellinios managed to get within 72-67 but Bullock and Paul Davis stepped up in crunch time to seal the outcome minutes before the final buzzer.
Tariq Kirksay got Cajasol going with a layup but Francis matched it with a put-back basket and Smith added a jumper for a 2-4 Panellinios lead. Francis scored again and then matched Mindaugas Katelynas' layup with an easy basket. Kirksay scored off a steal and a dunk by Katelynas forced Panellinios to stop the game at 9-8. Bullock hit free throws but an unstoppable Francis scored again. Kirksay and Bullock struck from downtown to boost Cajasol's lead to 17-10. Katelynas kept pacing the hosts with an easy basket and Ivanov found his first points but Francis and Smith kept Panellinios within 21-17 after 10 minutes. Ivanov shined with a put-back basket early in the second quarter but Vlado Scepanovic nailed a triple for a 23-20 score. Bojan Popovic scored in penetration and Triguero dunked it to keep Cajasol out of trouble, 27-20. Urtasun struck from downtown in a 13-0 run that Triguero capped with consecutive slams to break the game open at 36-20. Vangelis Sklavos and Bailey rescued Panellinios with free throws and even when Paul Davis sank a jumper, Krabbenhoft kept the guests within 38-28. Earl Calloway buried a triple but Panellinios had improved its defense. Bailey, Krabbenhoft and a triple by Papamakarios brought the guests back to life, 42-37, at halftime.
Tomas Satoransky sank a jumper right after the break but Smith and Krabbenhoft fueled a 0-9 run that completed the guests' comeback, 44-46. Cajasol had been scoreless for 2 minutes until Satoransky stepped up with a layup and a three-pointer, but free throws by Smith tied the game again, 49-49. Urtasun tried to change things with a layup and Katelynas added a put-back basket but Smith soon tied it at 53-53. Urtasun struck from downtown, Kirksay added an off-balance basket and Ivanov soon gave Cajasol a 60-55 edge. Ivanov stayed unstoppable and a dunk by Triguero capped a 10-0 run, 66-55. Bailey and Sklavos tried to change things for Panellinios but only brought the guests within 68-59 after 30 minutes. The hosts went scoreless for more than 3 minutes and a jumper by Bailey made it a seven-point game, 68-61. Triguero stayed on fire with a put-back layup and Bullock added free throws but Smith, Bailey and Sklavos got Panellinios even closer, 72-67. Cajasol improved its defense right when it mattered while Bullock and Davis fueled an 8-0 run that sealed the outcome, 80-67. A wild dunk by Satoranski allowed all Cajasol fans to celebrate that their team stayed unbeaten in the Last 16.
