Olympiacos, ruled on the road by 68-93 Asseco Prokom
Olympiacos took care of business on the road and beat Asseco Prokom 68-93 in Group E of the Euroleague. Olympiacos improved to 2-1 in the Top 16 and joins a three-way tie with Tau Ceramica and Armani Jeans for first place at 2-1. Meanwhile Prokom dropped to 0-3 and is just about out of hunt to advance. The Reds dominated Prokom by hitting a blistering 81% from two-point range as well as 46% of its three-pointers while outrebounding the hosts 39-20. Head coach Panagiotis Giannakis's side led by 4 points after one period and began taking control in the second quarter with runs of 5-14 and 2-11. Prokom was dominated in the third period as the deficit grew to 23 points, though the hosts tried to get back into the contest trailing by 17 going into the fourth. But Olympiacos used a 0-8 run in the final period to make it a 25-point game. Nikola Vujcic collected 21 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block to pace Olympiacos. Ioannis Bourousis and Georgios Printezis both added 12 points and Lynn Greer scored 10 points for the winners. Theo Papaloukas and Jannero Langdon both had 7 points and 6 assists. Prokom was led by David Logan's 18 points and 4 steals. Qyntel Woods had 12 points and Ronnie Burrell added 10 points in a losing effort.
Burrell opened the game with a dunk for Prokom after a nice dish from Pat Burke. And Burrell's jumper from the foul line made it 4-0. Printezis's jumper in lane got Olympiacos on the board and Yotam Halperin knotted the game with a driving layup before Printezis's dunk on the break gave the Reds the lead 4-6. Logan gave Prokom back the lead with back-to-back driving lay-ups and a Burrell three from the right wing gave the Polish champs an 11-6 advantage. Vujcic hit two tough baskets as Olympiacos regained the lead 11-12 only to see Woods knock down a triple for the hosts. Baskets by Burrell and Logan kept Prokom ahead 18-16 before a Printezis lay-in evened the game again and started a 1-7 run to finish the first quarter including Vujcic hitting a put-back after having his first attempt blocked and draining a three-ball from the left wing for a 19-23 lead after one period.
Bourousis opened the second quarter with a lay-in and a Tyrone Brazelton three-pointer from the left corner made it 22-25. Olympiacos used its advantage in the paint as Bourousis scored over Burke and then Vujcic scored with an easy lay-in after an inside pass by Bourousis to make it 22-29. Sofoklis Schortsanitis hit a right-handed hook and the gap grew to 10 points on Theo Papaloukas's driving lay-up to make it 24-34. Papaloukas's behind-the-back pass landed at Bourousis, who fought in the lay-up and converted the three-point play for a 26-37 lead. Schortsanitis's lay-up pushed the lead to 12 points and completed a 5-14 Olympiacos run. Logan drained a triple from the right wing to get the deficit down to 30-39. Olympiacos answered by finishing the first half on a 2-11 run with Schortsanitis making three free throws; Panagiotis Vasilopoulos nailing a three-ball from top of the key and Pargo knocking down a triple just before the buzzer to give the Reds a 32-50 lead at the break.
Vujcic's driving lay-up to start the second half pushed the lead to 20 points. Woods hit a tough lay-up and then a three-ball from the left wing to bring Prokom within 37-53. Printezis's lefty dunk was followed by Logan's steal and lay-up. Vujcic continued his superb with a lay-up and then he hit Papaloukas for a break-away lay-up and a 41-60 lead and a Prokom time-out. Woods came out of the time-out with a lay-up but Papaloukas and Printezis hit inside lay-ups and Printezis scored again inside after a fine pass by Vujcic as the lead grew to 23 points - 43-66. Woods stopped the surge with two foul shots but Papaloukas fed a driving Vujcic for a dunk and a 45-68 cushion. Prokom would try to come back. Filip Dylewicz tipped in a miss for Assesco and then nailed a three-ball. Przemyslaw Zamojski followed with a foul shot to trim the margin to 51-68. But Lynn Greer answered with a tough three to re-establish a 20-point lead. Zamojski however hit a triple from the right corner to leave Prokom trailing 54-71 after three periods.
Halperin's free throws opened the fourth and Koko Archibong hit Prokom's first basket of the quarter with a jumper in the lane to make it 56-73. Olympiacos refused to let the hosts back into the game. Greer nailed a three-ball before Vujcic fed Bourousis for an easy lay-up. And Greer's driving lay-up gave Olympiacos its biggest lead of the game, 25 points - 56-81. The Reds began bringing in its reserves and Prokom was able to cut into the lead with Logan hitting two baskets in the lane as well as a three-pointer to bring the margin to 65-85. Zoran Erceg hit his second inside lay-in before Zamojski drained a triple to make it 68-87. But Michalis Pelekanos and Halperin finished off the game with three-balls.
