Bayern remains atop Group F after beating Lietkabelis

FC Bayern Munich reached the midway point of the Top 16 with a perfect record by beating Lietkabelis Panevezys 85-69 on Wednesday at Audi Dome. While the result lifted Bayern it 3-0, it dropped Lietkabelis to 1-2 and third place in the group. Nick Johnson scored 17 points in 20 minutes off the bench and Nihad Djedovic had 14 in 16 minutes as the Bayern reserves outscored their counterparts 49 27. Devin Booker was the only Bayern starter in double figures; he posted 11 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Bayern also outrebounded Lietkabelis (37-27) in a game it led from tip to buzzer. Ben Madgen paced Lietkabelis with 17 points on 3-of-4 three-point shooting and Ksistof Lavrinovic added 11 points.

Bayern took charge early with three different players scoring in a 6-0 start. Alex King hit a three in the midst of an 11-1 run for the hosts’ first double-digit lead and Johnson extended the margin to 27-14 after 10 minutes. Lietkabelis scored the first two baskets of the second quarter through Gintaras Leonavicius and Zygimantas Janavicius, but Djedovic heated up for Bayern to restore a double-digit margin. Djedovic added a pair of threes in a 13-0 run that made it 47-26. A Darjus Lavrinovic triple and Madgen free throws trimmed the gap to 47-31 at halftime. Ksistof Lavrinovic and Lorenzo Williams both hit from behind the arc to get Lietkabelis within 60-47, but Johnson helped the hosts regain their composure and get to the end of the third quarter up 69-52. Magden twice got Lietkabelis as close as 15, but Bayern was never in trouble and cruised to victory.

"We were looking for a win. We had a solid game and a serious approach. We read their defenses well. As every experienced team does, they adjusted a little bit defensively, and offensively made few three-point shots that kept them in the game, at the same point-difference during the third and fourth quarters. We dominated the whole game, which is good. The result is also good regarding the point-difference. But we should not have played basket-for-basket in the second half. We should have focused more defensively, instead of focusing on the offensive end of the court. We must take care of the blackouts we had."

"Congratulations to Bayern. They played aggressive defense and we did not adapt to the tempo of the game and to the crowd. When you are playing at this level, in the Top 16, a couple defensive mistakes are not helping. "
