Gran Canaria breezes past ASVEL for fifth place

U18 Herbalife Gran Canaria secured fifth place at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Valencia after it knocked off U18 LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne 69-53. Kany Tchanda collected 19 points and 13 rebounds while Matheus Brito had 14 points and Jean Montero chipped in 11 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists in the victory. Zaccharie Risacher and Noah Manet both scored 12 points for ASVEL and Kenny Kasiama added 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Brito started hot with six points in a 13-5 run as Gran Canaria went up 13-7. David Navarro added a three-pointer and the lead was 20-10. After 10 minutes ASVEL trailed 22-14. The French side was within 24-18 when Tchanda scored seven points in an 11-3 spurt for a 35-21 Gran Canaria advantage. Tchanda added a three-point play and another basket to increase the cushion to 43-27 and it was 43-29 at intermission.

Tchanda’s four points extended Gran Canaria’s lead to 49-32 which ASVEL answered with the next eight points to trim the deficit to nine points. But the Spanish club was up 55-44 after 30 minutes. Montero started the fourth quarter with a three-pointer and it was 61-44 before Risarcher’s triple after more than 5 minutes finally got ASVEL on the scoreboard in the final frame. It would not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
