Chevon Troutman - FC Bayern MunichEurocup debutante FC Bayern Munich managed to pull its first win ever in the competition by getting rid of Benetton Basket at home on Tuesday night, 72-62. The win allows Bayern to start with a 1-0 record in Group G, while Benetton will stay at 0-1. Benetton took the lead early in the game, but soon Bayern jumped ahead and never looked back. Jekel Foster led the winners with 14 points, Jan Jagla added 12, Chevon Troutman had 11 plus 10 boards and Jonathan Wallace chipped in with 10. For Benetton, only Alessandro Gentile scored in double digits leading all scorers with his 19 points. The 10 free throws missed by the guests, 15 of 25, were decisive in the end for the final result.

The first minutes of the game were a constant back an forth with both teams pushing hard on both ends. Benetton was accurate from the arc with threes by Sandro Gentile, but veteran Aleksandar Nadjfeji was the one keeping Bayern in the game, 12-10 in minute 6. A three by Jan Jagla brought some light to Bayern's lead and then he scored again to make it 19-13 to close the first period. A better accuracy from 2-point range was keeping the hosts ahead and with such a close score, Benetton's 4 turnovers at that point were too much of a factor. The second quarter opened fire with a 6-0 for the hosts continuing the trend as Philipp Schwethelm's three made it the first double-digit lead of the night, 25-13. Demond Greene kept it tough for Benetton with a three that maintained the hosts at a safe distance, but then, between Mario Scalabrine and Gino Cuccarolo a 0-8 burst was on order for the 32-28. A three by Gal Mekel put Benetton even closer but Jonathan Wallace stopped the bleeding making it 36-31 at the break. Both teams were having a good night from the arc and they were completely tied in rebounds, 12-12, so the deciding factor would be found in the small details.

Defenses prevailed during the first minutes of the second half which allowed Bayern keep the lead in its favor. Gentile's three for Benetton made it 42-37 but he found a swift reply in Stefen Hamann, who copied him to keep it at 45-37. Je'Kel Foster and Massimo Bulleri traded more threes to keep the same scenario but it was Jonathan Wallace who closed the third period with a 10-point lead for Bayern, 56-46. In thelastperiod, Benetton kept fighting hard to be back in the game, but Bayern always found the right shot to keep things quiet. Robin Benzing was scoring for the hosts while Jeff Adrien was the main pillar in offense for the guests at this point. The guests however, were struggling from the free-throw line with 12 of 21 attempts, and that was becoming a big barrier as the game neared its completion. The game was closed by Jagla with a three under two minutes before the final buzzer that made it 70-59 and Bayern Munich could claim its first win in the Eurocup ever.

“We are very glad that we won this difficult game today, our first game in the Eurocup in Munich. It was not a win by luck, we deserved this success and that is something you look forward to as a coach. We started the game well; this was important for the victory today and it gave us confidence from the beginning. We played really good basketball in phases, and - that was the most important thing - defended for the first time this season 40 minutes on a high European level also. We allowed Benetton only 62 points, and that's important against teams that have such a high quality individual and as a team. So it was a good day for us. The audience in the Audi Dome was sensational again.”
DJORDJEVIC, SASA
Benetton Basket
"First of all congratulations to the Bayern team. I think the better team won the game. I am not happy the way my team played especially offensively. We were very out of our regular stuff lot of times. We have a young team and frenzy cannot be a part of our game. We have to work on that, but it’s not easy. We have a young team, very inexperienced, that does not know the players that they play against, that does not know the competitions and the open way of playing. We tried to take care of Foster because obviously he is the number one guy that is in great shape and we did a good job. We have been missing Becirovic, who is offensively our best player. He could be the guy to help us to a closer game. On nights like this, you feel when you miss a player like him.”
