Partizan outpowers Reyer at home

Partizan NIS Belgrade registered its first win in Group A by downing Umana Reyer Venice 95-73 in the Serbian capital on Tuesday. Both teams now have 1-1 records in Group A. Rashawn Thomas led the winners with 22 points, Codi Miller-McIntyre added 18 and Ognjen Jaramaz had 17 for Partizan. Mitchell Watt led Reyer with 16 points and Mike Bramos added 11 for the visitors, who led 48-50 right after halftime. Miller-McIntyre and Thomas combined for 22 third-quarter points as Partizan grabbed a 75-58 margin after 30 minutes and never looked back.

Thomas and Bramos traded three-pointers to get their teams going. Jaramaz and Miller-McIntyre each buried a jumper and then Rade Zagorac scored in transition. Watt singlehandedly kept Reyer within 10-9. Jamaraz kept pushing Partizan and Marcus Paige finished a three-chance offense with a triple that caused Reyer to call timeout at 18-11. Jeremy Chappell and Austin Daye rescued the visitors from downtown and got help from Gasper Vidmar to tie the game at 23-23 after 10 minutes. Stefano Tonut joined the three-point shootout to put Reyer ahead, 23-26, early in the second quarter. Erik Mika and Stefan Jankovic each scored down low and Miller-McIntyre added a fastbreak layup for a 29-28 Partizan lead. Watt scored in the low post and Julyan Stone added a triple to give the Reyer fresh air at 29-33. Jankovic answered from beyond the arc, but Tonut and Isaac Fotu kept Reyer in charge, 34-39. Jaramaz took over with a layup-plus-foul and Mika hit a jumper, but Vidmar and Chappell helped the visitors stay ahead, 42-43, at halftime.

Chappell took over with a coast-to-coast layup right after the break. He didn't find much help around, however, allowing Thomas and Nemanja Gordic to put Partizan ahead, 48-47. Bramos and Jaramaz traded triples, then Thomas followed a dunk with a layup-plus-foul for a 58-52 Partizan lead. Mika scored again and Thomas buried a shot from downtown to force Reyer to stop the game at 63-54. Thomas kept pushing the hosts, getting plenty of help from Miller-McIntyre and William Mosley to break the game open, 75-58, after 30 minutes. Partizan kept running its offense through its most athletic players early in the fourth quarter. Paige struck from beyond the arc and Dangubic put on the exclamation mark with a huge dunk that sealed the outcome, 82-60, as Reyer never recovered.

Pivotal performer

Miller-McIntyre did a little bit of everything to make sure Partizan cruised to a well-deserved win. He finished the game with 18 points on 7-of-8 two-point shooting, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 5 fouls drawn for a PIR of 25 - 1 shy of his career-best effort.

Game-changing moment

Thomas hit the game's opening shot, but picked up 2 quick fouls and sat out for the best part of the first half. He had 10 points in a 15-4 run that allowed Partizan to take the lead for good, 63-54, late in the third quarter. From dunks to three-pointers to layup-plus-fouls, he showcased his full set of skills in that run.

Stellar stat

Partizan outrebounded Reyer 42-25 in this game including 18 offensive rebounds, its best mark in the competition since 2017. Nine of those offensive boards came in the first quarter, in which Partizan set the tone for the rest of the game in terms of energy and willingness. Partizan also sank 28 of 45 two-point shots (62.2%) and Reyer only made 15 of 31 (48.4%)

"It is a big victory and I am really proud of my guys, they deserved it, because we are working hard every day. In sports, especially in basketball, nothing can happen overnight. There is a process, day by day. We are in a difficult situation because of everything around, this virus and everything, but when you are fair with yourself, to your team, when you build a team and everyone is honest inside, nobody can beat us. This team has great potential but we need time. Nothing can happen overnight. It was crucial to play with this energy from the beginning, with this defense, with this behavior that everything wants to help each other and play for the team... I said many times until now: we can make it only as a team, defense and offense. This is very simple, but on the other hand, it is difficult."
DE RAFFAELE, WALTER
Umana Reyer Venice
"I think we really played two different games. The first two quarters, almost good, especially more on offense than on defense because we also struggled on defense in the first two quarters. Really negative the second two quarters, third and fourth, especially on the defensive side, because it is something that really we don't usually allow. But I think that the key was the energy and the effort that both teams put on the court and Partizan deserved to win this game. They really beat us up. They really played aggressively and we didn't respond to that. We allowed them to get 18-19 offensive rebounds and I think all the difference is over there. We lost confidence, they gained confidence, so we need to work hard on that. It is a game that we need to remember when Partizan comes back to Venice. Partizan put out a great effort and broke the game in 5 minutes with [Rashawn] Thomas. When Partizan got confidence, we took a step back and lost confidence in our rules. So the difference, at this level, is always 2-3 minutes when you don't execute and don't find easy baskets on offense. Then they broke the game. We didn't respond to their aggressiveness and to play physical, with hands. It is normal that this could happen because this is a great team and we really need to play for 40 minutes in the same way."

"We picked up our defensive intensity a lot and I think that is what gave us a chance to go up 20-22 points. It was definitely a good job tonight. Team effort, team defense and just getting the ball in the paint to get easy baskets, rebounds... we did a really good job in terms of intensity. I am definitely satisfied with my game, but I still made a lot of mistakes, a few extra turnovers, I gave up a few easy buckets... There is still a lot to improve defensively and offensively."
THOMAS, RASHAWN
Partizan NIS Belgrade
"We knew going into halftime that this team is a great team, one of the best teams in the EuroCup, and that they were going to come out with a push in the third quarter. So we knew we had to come out, make a statement and play with a lot of energy, so that is what we did. Our energy was crucial. That is going to be one of our strengths all season, especially without our crowd. They usually give us a huge boost of energy, so we need to start creating that ourselves and being able to generate it."
