ASVEL trounces Limoges in Coach Parker’s debut

ASVEL Villeurbanne made new head coach T.J. Parker’s debut a successful one by beating up on French League rival Limoges CSP 92-78 on Wednesday night in Group H. With the victory, ASVEL joined a three-way tie for first place in the group at 2-1 midway through the Top 16, while Limoges fell to 0-3. These teams meet one another next week at Limoges. Eight different ASVEL players made three-pointers as the team shot 11 for 23 from downtown (47.8%) in one of the keys to the victory. Darryl Watkins paced the winners with 17 points and 7 rebounds, John Roberson scored 13, David Lighty 12 and A.J. Slaughter tallied 11 points and 6 assists. The hosts took charge with a 13-0 first-quarter run, led by 7 at halftime and increased the margin to double figures early in the third quarter en route to a convincing win. Axel Bouteille, Brian Conklin and Tautvydas Lydeka scored 12 points apiece for Limoges, William Howard added 11 points and Mam Jaiteh 10.

Limoges got early threes from Howard and Kenny Hayes to lead 5-8. A floater by Dru Joyce and Conklin free throw made it 7-13. Justin Harper heated up for the hosts with a pair of threes and Roberson produced a steal and layup in between. Lighty added a three-point play before Alpha Kaba capped a 13-0 ASVEL run with free throws that made it 22-15. Bouteille’s fadeaway jumper ended the Limoges drought and made it 22-17 after 10 minutes. Bouteille scored again to start the second quarter and Jaiteh hit a mid-range jumper to bring the visitors to 24-23. ASVEL regrouped with a Nicolas Lang triple and 5 points from Slaughter to regain control at 32-25. Limoges rallied to within 2 on another three by Howard, but a nifty layup by Roberson and a Watkins slam kept ASVEL on control. Amine Noua’s three-pointer lifted ASVEL to 44-37 at the break.

The hosts stretched the difference to double figures on a basket-plus-foul by Slaughter in the third minute of the second half. Limoges fought back to 52-46 on a baby hook by Jaiteh, but Slaughter hit back from downtown. Conklin also narrowed the gap to 6, but DeMarcus Nelson responded with a three-pointer. Nelson added another assist and two more buckets to keep ASVEL cruising at 64-53 through three quarters. Nelson used a steal and slam to boost the margin to 14 early in the fourth quarter. The ASVEL lead peaked at 73-56 on a jumper by Watkins and it would touch 17 several more times as the hosts celebrated a win over a local rival.

Head Coaches

PARKER, TJ
ASVEL Villeurbanne
"Congratulations to the players. We expected a reaction. They had it. But the most important reaction will be for Saturday. We need to win to go to the Leaders Cup. Tonight, the intensity was very good, and we can be happy for our offense."
MILLING, KYLE
Limoges CSP
"We expected a tough game, considering the last big loss and the head coaching change for ASVEL, and I think we had a pretty good answer in the first three quarters. But in the last one, we were completely destroyed by their intensity, their agressiveness."

Players

NELSON, DEMARCUS
ASVEL Villeurbanne
"The EuroCup is an important ambition for the organization. Obviously, our last performance was a disgrace, and we needed to fight back. So it was important for us to come out and play strong, get a victory, and keep our chance alive to qualify for the next round of the EuroCup."
NOUA, AMINE
ASVEL Villeurbanne
"We were in a hurry tonight. We had to win the game and we played with rhythm. If we go on like this, I think that we can create something with this team. We need to put such energy like this into every game."
