Strasbourg locked first place in Group A by edging Brose Baskets Bamberg 63-70 in Germany on Wednesday. Strasbourg improved to 8-1 to seal first place while Bamberg dropped to 6-3 and will be second in Group A. Antoine Diot paced the winners with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Janis Strelnieks led Bamberg with 13 points while Brad Wanamaker added 10, 8 assists and 4 steals for the hosts. Bamberg led 18-13 after 10 minutes and used a 12-0 run to boost its margin to 30-15. Strasbourg managed to get within 32-25 at halftime but a three-pointer by Strelnieks made Bamberg regain a double-digit lead, 37-25. Strasbourg found a go-to guy in Diot, who had 10 points in a 0-15 run and struck from downtown on the third-quarter buzzer for a 49-51 lead after 30 minutes. Louis Campbell and Matt Howard stepped up in crunch time to make Strasbourg cruise to a very important road win.

Elias Harris got Bamberg going with a dunk with free throws but Ali Traore and Mickael Gelabale tied it at 4-4. Harris scored again and a layup by Ryan Thompson ignited a 6-0 run which Karsten Tadda capped with a jumper for a 12-6 Bamberg lead. Bangaly Fofana, Jeremy Leloup and Tadija Dragicevic fueled a 0-7 run which gave Strasbourg a 12-13 lead. Three-pointers by Andreas Obst and Josh Duncan restored a 18-13 Bamberg lead after 10 minutes. Anthony Dobbins hit a jumper early in the second quarter but Trevor Mbakwe led a 12-0 run in which Thompson and Daniel Theis struck from downtown to break the game open, 30-15. Gelabale and Dragicevic tried to change things for Strasbourg and Dobbins brought the guests within 30-24, after a 0-9 run. Free throws by Wanamaker and Traore fixed the halftime score at 32-25. A jumper by Wanamaker and a three-pointer by Strelnieks made it a double-digit game, 37-25, right after the break. A wild four-point play by Diot ignited a 0-15 run in which he had 10 points, including a layup-plus-foul that completed the guests' comeback, 37-40. Strelnieks and Theis stepped up to restore a 43-40 Bamberg lead. Fofana and a red hot Diot allowed Strasbourg to regain the lead, 49-51, after 30 minutes. Dragicevic struck from downtown but Wanamaker and Duncan tied it at 54-54. Leloup hit free throws, Traore scored down low and a three-pointer by Campbell gave Strasbourg a 54-61 edge. Theis brought Bamberg within 60-63 but Campbell and Howard sealed the outcome down the stretch.

"Sometimes it is not clear why things are happening, but today this is not the case. It is clear why we lost. First of all we lost against a good team and they were better. They out-played us in the second half offensively and defensively. It is sad, but it is the truth. We were not able to stop Diot and on offense we played extremely poor. Not good enough in defense… It is very disappointing. I really don’t like to lose home games, and I don’t like to lose games in a full arena. But this happened. I feel disappointed, I feel sorry, I would say I am mad – first at myself. To play these kinds of games, a tactical game against very good defense, against experienced players, you need to play smart, you need to go exactly in the right position at the right time, otherwise you turn over the ball. So we are talking about a game where every possession was crucial and we turned over the ball 17 times. This is one of the keys of our loss. "

“It was a surprising win for me, because in first half we did not play good. We were lucky to come to the locker room with only 7-point difference behind Bamberg. I think they dominated the first half and showed more determination; we were a little naïve sometimes. Thankfully for us Bamberg did not really take advantage of our mistakes in the first half. I congratulate my players, because we succeeded to change after halftime our behavior. We came back with a different intention. Even though Bamberg made the first 5 points, we started to move the ball much better, and attacked much better. That gave us some good shots from outside. We had difficulties again at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but never like in the first half, when we were dominated. The game was tied and in the last couple of minutes we had the chance to make a couple of stops and score good baskets that gave us the win.”
