Victor Claver - Valencia Basket (photo Valencia Basket)Valencia overpowered Buducnost 84-60 to grab a spot in the Eurocup Finals in Khimki, Russia, on April 14 and 15. Valencia lost the opener to Buducnost and needed to win this game by more than 4 to move on. It exceeded that total early in the first quarter and maintained a double-digit lead throughout, reaching a 31-point advantage early in the final quarter. The hosts used a balanced attack, led by Victor Claver’s 13 points, including 3 of 4 from three-point range, while Andrew Ogilvy, Vitor Faverani and Nik Caner-Medey contributed 11 points apiece. Bojan Dubljevic paced the losers with 17 points and Jermaine Anderson added 13.

Valencia opened on the attack as Victor Claver nailed a three-pointer then Andrew Ogilvy and Nik Caner-Medley each added a layup on the way to a 10-2 spurt. After Bojan Dubljevic stroked a three pointer for Buducnost, the hosts added 4 points from the foul line, then the visitors’ Cedomir Vitkovac and Jermaine Anderson powered in a layup each to cut the lead to 14-9. Cedomir added free throws but Faverani added a basket down low on the way to a 14-2 surge that including three-pointers by Florent Pietrus and Nando De Colo, who subsequently added two free throws, to give the hosts a double digit lead, 28-11, at the end of the first quarter. After Buducnost got 4 points on the foul line to open the second quarter, Brad Newley barreled into the lane for floating one hander and Faverani dunked to push the score to 32-15. The visitors’ Marko Popovic drilled a triple from the corner, then Faverani banged in a layup and Rafa Martinez nailed a laser from downtown as Valencia kept its foot on the gas, 37-18. Dubljevic took over for the visitors, producing 6 straight points, muscling in two consecutive layups and draining a mid-range jumper to slice the lead to 37-24. After Caner-Medley buried a triple and De Colo added free throws, Dubljevic knocked down another layup for a 41-26 advantage. Stefan Markovic drained a three-pointer, but then Anderson hit a two-point jumper with the shot clock running down to set the score at 44-28 to end the half.

Ogilvy banked in a layup, then after Marko Popovic nailed a triple, Martinez and Claver each added a bomb from deep to widen the lead to 52-31. Cedomir and Ogilvy swapped layups, then Anderson hit a two-point jumper to move the scoreboard to 54-35. Caner-Medley made a pair of foul shots then Claver went coast to coast with a steal and dunk as Valencia’s lead ballooned to 58-35. Dubljevic hit a put-back off the offensive glass, but Ogilvy and Caner-Medley also scored in the paint and Claver dunked on the fast break as the hosts pulled further away 64-37. Anderson nailed a triple for the visitors, but free throws and a dunk by Newley ended the third quarter with Valencia ahead 72-42. Buducnost outscored the hosts 4-8 after over 4 minutes into the quarter, then Markovic buried a three and Ogilvy scored under the basket to set the score at 81-50. After an exchange of three-pointers by Marko Popovic and Rodrigo San Miguel, Dubljevic scored the last points of the game as Valencia crushed Buducnost 84-60.

Head Coaches

"To win a game like this is very difficult. We played a very high level of defense and kept the faith for 40 minutes. The Finals will be difficult, regardless of the team we have to play against."
RADONJIC, DEJAN
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"Congratulations to Valencia. We wish the best for them in the Finals. They deserved the victory. Our most important player, Krstovic, was injured, and we suffered a lot. Valencia Basket played very good defense."

Players

PIETRUS, FLORENT
Valencia Basket
"I feel so happy. We accomplished our first goal and now come the good times because we’re going to Moscow. People think that it was easy, but it was a tough game. We defended well and eventually we won by 20, but it wasn’t an easy game. It was a very hard road. Defensive intensity was the key. At this level the defenses always win. We started the well, focused on defense and that’s the reason we had success in offense. "
DUBLJEVIC, BOJAN
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"They played stronger and we couldn’t do anything. We played badly in defense and they did really well in this sense. We don’t feel great now, but this is the game, this is basketball. We have to keep training more and more to get better. "
